Change both. You will beat the hell out of a new chain by running it on worn sprockets, one or both.:peace:

I not a material engineer - just a mechanical eng, but Ti would be good possible alternative from steel. Lighter and very hard depending on alloy.
Sidewinder is on my maybe list come chain change time. Cant speak for any cons.
I would avoid aluminum on all but a race bike. It would just wear out twice as fast and you have to do the job twice as often. For a street bike, I'll pass.

    Putting it all on

So, I got my chain and sprockets kit from that place up in Sacramento (that place was by far the cheapest); now I am trying to figure out how long it is going to take to do this. How much time do you guys think it will take to replace the chain and sprockets, start to finish? Also, besides the press for the master link and a dremmel tool (plus wrenches and sockets), are there any other tools I might need.

    Thanks,
    Mel

CZ makes chain equal in quality to RK or DID. I have their top of the line chain on my bike, and it's great. It's rated at 9600lbs. tensile strength, and it uses X-rings. The thing must weigh ten pounds... it's BEEFY!

Oh yeah, they only cost 75 bucks, not more than $120 like the other brands.

Here is some interesting information that I dug up last night while goofing off on the 520 Conversion Conversation thread:

    http://www.rk-excel.co.jp/english/tech1.htm

    http://www.rk-excel.co.jp/english/tech6.htm

    http://www.rk-excel.co.jp/english/tech5.htm

    http://www.ekchain.com/zzz.htm

    http://sidewindersprockets.com/titanium_sprockets.html

I was especially interested in the dyno graphs with the HP and torque comparisons in the second link. The EK Chain link is pretty interesteing too. I also posted a link to the Ti sprockets that were asked about. Another interesting sprocket is the Stealth Tri-Metal which can also be found at that site.

See my "520 conversion conversation" thread on this.

The kit has a "softer" Aluminum rear sprocket (steel is NOT available through them for the VFR), and the chain has a clipped master link (which is questionable to use on a 750 cc sportbike). Plus, shipping is $20, which I deem a little overboard.

I think that I am going to go with the Sacramento kit Vlad suggested at this point.:bowl:

thanks for the info. i ordered a set from the sacramento place. i however ended up getting aluminum rear gear due to the ratio i wanted. they didnt have steel either. but im staying with the 530 chain so all should be well.

Sorry to re-open an old thread, but I just bit the bullet on the RK 530 kit that Vlad suggested. Still $153.88, I'll see it in the next week.

I cleaned up the swingarm and the front sprocket area in preparation for this new part. It will look great once installed!!!:whoo:

I am always super stoked to install new parts!!!:becky:

All installed last night. As with all new clean parts, the job was super easy.

I don't know how I manage to not have any left over bolts and nuts, because I always just toss everything in a pile. But everything went back together with no extra parts. :first:

I am super happy to finally have my VFR back together, it's been apart in the garage for several months.

Too bad it fu@*ing snowed three inches last night!!! When is spring supposed to arrive???:smow:

When my local dealer parts guy sees me walk in with a print out - he does a groan. I have been showing the best internet deal and he turns around and meets or beats it, most times. - Cool, no shipping....

I usually avoid an aluminum sprocket because it will wear out sooner than a steel one.

yeah thats pretty much my feeling too. but i dont know if im going to like the set-up when im done, so i might switch out the rear after riding season. in which case i think the aluminum will be ok for a year. if i like it then i might go for a steel one.

I haven't done the master link yet.

However, the chain is put together, the pins on the master link fit really tight with the plate on the other side. I thought they would press together and the staking would actually hold the whole deal together, but it's a lot tighter fit than that.

I took my favorite multi-tool (4 lb. mini-sledge) and placed it behind the chain/rear sprocket (as a dolly of sorts). I took a 3/8" extension and a 7/32" socket and placed it over the hole on the side plate. A few taps with a normal hammer (with the chain braced against the mini-sledge), and the master link pins emerged from/through the side plate.:clap2:

My local motorcycle shop rents the tool to stake the pins for $10. I can do 15 chain jobs for the price the tool runs for. Once this is all together, I'm ready for the road! Too bad the roads up here aren't ready for me. :smow:

just to let anyone know who was curious i just installes a 15/45 tooth set-up and took for a spin today. what a great improvement. its not going t get you doing wheelies or anything ( unless u want to i guess) but it mades it much more streetable in stop and go traffic and as long as the speedohealer is close i only added about 500 rpm@65. so i like it. just f.y.i

Anyone try out the "new" EK screw on master link?

I hate to revive an old thread too, but I was searching around for suggestions on a chain and sprocket web site, and I saw a few comments on the master link rivet install. I too was going to suck it up and buy the tool set, but I've read some great review on this EK screw on master link, and seen it online for betweek $11-15. That's a great savings over the nearly $100 most places want for the chain tool kit. Hell, half the review I read for the tool kit said parts broke after the first use on some of the "less than premium" kits:crazy:.

Any one use or know of someone who has used the EK link?
