Turn the key, punch the starter, grab the clutch, snick it into 1st - then what?

It's still a bajillion below outside and it'll be at least 8 weeks before the glaciers start receding & even a hint of riding weather returns so, being a virgin Veefer rider & having no trust in the owner's manual, what are my shift points (I haven't even had a tach for the last 4 years!)?

Any advice and suggestions re break in period, etc. welcome!

    Thanks!

I would suggest using that owners manual...they are usually quite correct as far as the break in period....my .02

If you are breaking it in the best thing to do is make sure you hit VTEC in every gear. NO, NO, NO don't do that. Only kidding. With mine I tended to short shift just a little bit. (not quite as much as the owners man. says) It is kinda hard to refrain from putting the bike in the power band though.

It's just as important not to lug the engine as not to over-rev...

After I had a couple hundred easy miles, I started runing it to 11K, BUT it was done slowly and only for a few seconds, then slowly back down.

I don't know if that was right, but it was something recomended to me. Makes sence that even the Vtech needs a little break in too. My bike runs great so I guess it didn't hurt it.

Those first 600 miles are the hardest.

    hahaaa...JMO...

just drive the bike..dont look at the tach..just make it go..shift when it feels good...simple as that. Just like you have been...

I dont think its possible to actually ride one and shift where the book says..you will be run over by golf carts , cows, snakes, or fall asleep and be killed!!

As for breakin....I just drive em normal, make sure she's warmed up before you let fly, and vary the speed plenty. Don't lug to build up heat;.
I usually make it a few hrs (sometimes) before I see redline on my new ones...and I have never had a dud..(just some bad choices)

But nothing wrong with the slow thing as you as the driver will gain more learning about the bike ands its handling than it will matter to the engine..:)

    enjoy!!

Thanks Nitro. If the Veefer manual is anything like the manual for the Shadow, and that's what I'm going by, then the shift points recommended would have meant serious lugging of the engine.

Kamloops is a great place, you're right. I lived in North Vcr. for 7 years back in the 90's and travelled to Kelowana/Kamloops area many times.
