Hello everbody, 3 year '96 VFR 750 owner here, first time poster. I have a couple of questions. 1 I just put on a zero gravity, dark smoke SR stock type winshield on my bike, do I have to worry about it melting my dash/gauges? 2 I am desperately looking for a high mount exhaust for my bike, if I can actually find one, can I just slip it on and be done with it? Or do I have to do anything else to the bike, i.e. jet kit, adjust carbs, etc ?? Any help in locating said high mount exhaust would be greatly appreciated as well. My only other mod was picking up a used Corbin seat off Ebay for $130. That's right, $130!! I love my VFR! Russell
1. You really have me lost on that one? How would the windshield melt your gauges? 2. I think if you do find one, your best bet is re-jetting appropriately, but I ride a 5g so I can't speak from personal experience. (I have FI) 3. welcome to the club, and great deal on the corbin!
1 There is a warning on the packaging from Zero Gravity that reads as follows....... MOTORCYCLE DASHBOARDS: In certain rare instances the material used by motorcycle manufacturers in the construction of dash boards and gauges is made from plastics that have an inherently low melting point. Zero Gravity assumes no liability for any melting or deforming of the dashboard or its components due to heat from the sun or for any other reason. Please make sure to cover your dashboard if you plan to leave your bike exposed to the sun for any length of time. 2 That's what I was afraid of, I only want the high mount exhaust to show off the rear wheel but I don't want to have to change anything else because of it. Welcome--I doubt you will have any problem with any melting issues-sounds like alot of lawyer speak to me!
Stupid lawyers... Unless you live in the mojave desert I don't think you have to worry about your gauges melting.
I would think that a smoked screen would DECREASE the chances of your gauge cluster melting, as it would: A.) shade the cluster better than the OEM a clear screen. B.) Absorb more radiant heat energy from the sun's rays. See A.) If you do a high mount, do you lose the passenger footpegs? I have checked my bike out, ans it seems as if there is really not enough room for a muffler that high up... Or more specifically MY TBR can... I thought that it would be as simple as replacing the connector pipe to a high-mount style, but it ain't that simple.out: A jet kit would be helpful, but I haven't found the need with my slip-on. Yeah, it pops and crackles on decel, but I think it's cool and racy. It has plenty of pop for me without the jet kit, but I'm coming from an '82 Yamaha XS400R...:biggrin:
Hey Russell, welcome to the group. As for your questions: 1: With the original windscreen, you would not have a problem with melting the gauges or the dash. I have heard of it melting the plastic brake reservoir (sp?) on sportbikes and degrading the fluid, but have not seen it first hand. Also, that is not a problem on the VFR because the reservoir's are not plastic. 2. There should still be some aftermarket high rise exhausts, just have to hunt for them. Most are slip on and have everything you need. I agree with Reg on rejetting. 3. Again, I agree with reg, sweet find on the Corbin. Enjoy the group, and once again, welcome.
Thanks for the feedback everybody. I guess I'll keep looking for a high mount exhaust but it will be on the back burner for now. I have a $500 bill staring me in the face for the 24k mile service on my bike. It needs it too, because I'm getting married in April and we are taking the bike with us to Charleston, S.C. for the honeymoon. No helmet laws!! I can't wait.
what about doing it yourself? what are they doing to make it so high? the vfr is not too hard to work on... must be the valve clearances?
