Cold Weather Riding Gear

For those of you who ride in the cooler temps, what do you wear to keep warm? I haven’t had the funds or time to install any electrically heated gear so this is what I’ve been wearing.

Jacket – Joe Rocket Meteor with liner ($45 in the bargain basement @ newenough). I really like the JR jacket for cooler temps. I wear just the shell for anything in the 55 to 70 range. Anything colder and I put the liner in, then it’s good for any temp I’d ride in (19F yesterday).

Pants – TourMaster Caliber – These pants are WARM. I haven’t put the liner in yet and they’re fine. They come in tall sizes and fit as labeled. I wear mine over jeans or Dockers when I ride to work.

Boots – Set Up Grand Prix’s – Not really a winter boot but they work fine with an extra pair of socks

Gloves – TourMaster Cold Tech – These gloves work well and still provide decent feel. They take some getting use to over summer gloves but are way warmer. If I decide to get any heated gear, gloves or grip warmers will be first on the list as my hands are always the first thing to get cold.

Neck Gator – military issue – I really like having something to keep your neck warm. Mine is long enough to tuck the top inside the helmet and still have the bottom inside your jacket. This one is thin enough that it doesn’t feel like its strangling you but is also windproof.

I have some Gerbing heated socks but I can't wear them. If my boots were about 3 sizes too big I probably could, but at only one size too big there is no way. Also, I usually have to wear my HJC helmet if I use the "Shellaclava" since my Arai is too tight.

When it's a bit warmer I go with a Joe Rocket Phoenix mesh jacket with the liner, Held "Steve" gloves, and lose the overpants.

I keep forgetting to pull a neck guard out of the ski box, but I've been hauling extra crap to work lately and have not ridden often enough for it to be a bother.

 

Aerostich electric vest and heated grips. Toasty warm and it crumples up pretty small when the day warms up. Installation couldn't have taken more than 1/2 an hour on a Gen 5.

 

I'm looking for a Spidi Admiral, thing is, in the states,I see they only come in black only. Boo Hiss. I saw a while back that they also came in white and red over in Japan, so if anyone has a connection I can take advantage of, please contact me. Oooo I like that whit one. Also heard rumors the folks in the land of Oz has em, but I have not confirmed that.

 

cold weather gear

Okay, here is what I have settled in to after many years of trial and error:


One or more layers of silk and/or thicker synthetic insulated underwear top and bottom is a good first step. They also have sock liners at camping supply stores but I think socks alone work fine since you're not working up a sweat on a bike in winter.

I have used my Widder electric vest for 25 yrs. and it is still the one thing I wouldn't want to be without in cold weather. They also now make heated sleeves to attach to the Widder vest or other companies make full heated jacket liners that combine the vest and sleeves into one garment. One of these would probably be nice when and if my vest ever dies.

Over jeans or just the insulated underwear, a bib-overall type set of insulated snow/ski pants to block the wind from the bottom half.

If it's really cold, Widder electric chaps are a good addition under the insulated overalls and can be used just under jeans, as well. They even slide down into my boots and across the top of my foot.

An Aerostitch wind triangle (same vintage as the vest) keeps the cold wind off my neck and out of my jacket.

I used Widder electric gloves for many years but now prefer electric grips. I installed the Hot Grips electric grips recently on my '07 VFR and they work great.

There are lots of good gloves out there these days. Take your pick. Aerostitch Triple Digit rain covers are good to carry in any season.

The electric vest goes on after the bib overalls. Then if it's really cold, I use a polypropylene jacket over the electric vest.

Finally, a good wind proof jacket with a liner finishes it off.

Mine is an Icon Motorhead jacket, which I just purchased about a year ago. It is made of competition grade leather with multiple operable vent points for summer riding, a removeable liner and body armor and it even has a St. Christopher medal sewn discreetly inside one of the inner pockets. It's a very nice piece at a great price. I highly recommend it for a year-round jacket with excellent protection and a design that is not as jazzy as some are these days.

Before I got my first piece of electric gear (the vest), I froze my ass off.

AMAZING???

Has anyone put long leads on their Voltage Regulator and stuffed it into their coat......good tummy warmer for those who can't afford heated grips?? Might be pleasant in the crotchal region too..Your Mr. Johnson could be ridin' in Miami Beach!
