No reserve switch. You have an inaccurate gauge.

The only switch on the '94-'97 bike is the fuel on/off switch under the tank.

NO reserve setting, only an inaccurate warning light.

    ...an inoperative warning light...

Does anyones light even come on? I can drain my tank and it still stays off.

My light illuminates when the needle hits the red line next to E.

    My gauge works as follows:
Pegged at FULL for 100 miles
    Drops to 1/2 shortly thereafter
    1/2 to E is about 75 miles
Runs on E for about 35 more

Sounds like Honda cheaped out on the sender unit.:yield:

You'll notice that if you look at the sender unit as simply a fuel height gauge, not compensated for volume, and then look at the shape of the tank and the volume in the differing areas of the tank, that the gauge is quite accurate - just at providing a relative *level* of fuel in the tank, not the volume.

if you have no warning light either bulb is shot OR maybe a wire under the fuel tank is not plugged in.

OR the sensor is shot; like mine. Since I don't have the original gaugeboard on the bike anymore, I was going to hook up just the low-level sensor to an idiot light, but NO!!! That sensor doesn't work on my Ebay-special sending unit. So, I regrouped, and hooked the level gauge to the light; it's bright when full, and gets dimmer as the level drops. Sorta backwards, but it gives me an idea of the fuel situation.

120-150 miles between fill-ups would be safe, according to how you've been riding (interstate or city stop and go).

I get around 200 average to the tank...Highway, and a little "horsin" around in the city...I would say 175-200....ah yeah don't feel too stupid, I've had numerous bikes in my day, and I looked for that damn reserve switch for quite some time, then I figured it out...and my light works fine....

Wow missed a good 4th gen question sheesh! I'm slipping Mmm range? an easy 220miles should be in the safe range. I've seen 240 more than once all though the needle is pointing south the low fuel light isn't on yet, and mine works. I've seen the light come on any where from the 200 mark to the 240s if it's all freeway I can see into the 250s but most of the time I refuel around the 210-220 mark and only need to put in a tad more than 4 gallons, light comes on around the 4.7 mark for this 5.5 gallon tank. thou since I hardly ever see the low fuel light much, I do drain it till it comes on to know it's still working. Oh, like you haven't figured it out by now, there is no reserve lever like past bikes.

    Low Fuel Sending Unit

The low fuel warning light is activated by a separate sensor (4th gen vfr's). It is inside the tank on a separate fixed arm beside the swinging arm for fuel level. The sender contains some sort of fine wire filament that conducts when exposed to air. (circuit closed = light on | circuit open = light off). I have had two of them apart and in both cases the filaments were burnt off. It seems very delicate for motorcycle use. Mine died after the bike was knocked of the stand in a parking lot. It would be a simple matter to attach a different sensor to the arm if I could find a suitable one.
