Center stand and cornering

It's raining today (which is a good thing since we're in a drought here), so I propped the bike up on the center stand to look over everything. It's fairly new--I've put about 1000 miles on it since I bought it last month.

I noticed that I have about a 1/4" of virgin tread on the right side of my back tire, but perhaps as much as 3/4" on the left side. I don't want to push it too hard to the left because I have this fear that the center stand will touch down and cause an incident. Does anyone else share this concern or am I obsessing over nothing? Will the peg hit first?

I've never had a bike with a center stand, so this is new territory for me.

 

You should be able to ride on all the tread on your tires without touching the peg or your center stand. Yes, the peg will touch 1st and then your pipes if they're on the side, and then usually your hip, arm and head will touch after that.

 

I can take pics of my rear tire clearly showing indications of wear all the way to the very edge of the tread. I've drug the center stand once & that was when I hit a bump & it bounced down. I changed my foot pegs because I ripped the hero peg off the right peg. Trust me, you'll have no problem.

On my Hawk, I can lean past the point where the pegs touch & actually lever the back end sideways when the center stand hits. I back off & it still goes exactly where I want it too. I would venture a guess to say that my Hawk (the way it's set up, not a stock one) is one of the best handling bikes on the planet. I actually scare myself at times when I see how far I can lean & not wipe out.

Cool thanks, that makes me feel better about pushing the envelope a bit harder. Still getting used to her... I must say, so far this bike has been a great companion. It's pretty forgiving and stable.

 

that is good to know, but on the road i have never ever touched the pegs on this bike...I sure have a lot to learn before i feel comfortable with that.

The settings on suspension is medium to hard,depending on ride.

 

Honda did some great engineering on keeping the center stand from being an obstacle during hard cornering. I use all of my tires available tread and both the center stand and kick stand have not been an issue. I have grind my center stand while riding 2 up during a sweet turn. This leads me to believe that your suspension should not be too soft or unbalanced.

Grinding the foot pegs is expected if you are leaning the bike over and you should not freak out when you encounter this. Some people ride with their feet not center (or having extra large feet) on the foot pegs and tend drag their foot during a hard cornering.

While I have not really drag and grind my center stand that much, I have grinded an excessive amount of my exhaust pipes that are just forward of my center stand. To keep from grinding anymore of my exhaust, I had to make some adjustments to my bikes geometry by raising my ride height 3/4 inch to allow more cornering clearance. I do not recommend for anyone to do this until they fully understand how this will affect the handling and stability of the bike by making this type of adjustment.

 

The Peg feeler will touchdown first, if you are worried about how far you lean the bike over try to hang off in corners more keeping it more upright and make sure Preload is set right for your weight....
