Well it finally happened. I finally have experience a problem with my 97 VFR. I have no low beam headlights. I have high beams though. I removed both bulbs and they appear in tact. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks.

the low beam always goes first, its easy to ride with one bulb out and not know it until the other goes out. you can check the bulbs & the sockets with a meter, if OK then the problem is in the switch. ps.dont touch bulbs w/fingers or clean w/alcohol after.

sounds like a switch issue to me if both bulbs are out.

    Pull bulb.

    Go to dark room.

Touch 9V battery to terminals A-B, then A-C.

If both filaments illuminate, problem is switch. If not, problem is both bulbs burnt out.

Bulbs can "look" great, and still have a broken filament. Always replace bulbs in pairs.

It's not a fuse if you still have high beams. Just go buy a couple of bulbs and put them in (you'll need them sooner or later) if you still have only high beams the problem is most likely the high/low switch.the other possibility is the wire harness, but you'll need a muti-meter (their cheep) to check continuity

I can't swear to this on a 97, but my 91 has a high and a low beam relay, and I see no reason Honda would have deleted them. These relays keep the switch from having to handle the current of the bulbs. Relays fail more often than switches, so if it isn't a bulb, I'd check the relays. I just replaced one myself, but I didn't pay Honda $30.00+ for one. I got a generic automotive relay for $7.00 and wired it in. Not as easy, but it works the same.

When I first got my '94, I noticed that both low beams were out.
I immediately suspected a switch or relay problem, but didn't have time or inclination to get into it at the time.

Then one of the high beams went out.
I had to ride it like that due to no $$, but then about 2 weeks later the 2nd high beam went out.
    No headlights at all...

I replaced both bulbs (H4's, jammed in) and all four beams (both lows & both highs) worked.

    It was the bulbs.

If your car uses H4's, pull one and use it as a free test of the bike's circuits.
Just connect the VFR's plugs to the bulb, both sides, and check low & high - see what you get.

never mind how the bulbs appear......
take out the multimeter you use to check your voltage regulator output daily and check for voltage at headlight plug....

Thanks for all the great ideas fellas! Sorry to be so late in replying, but due to budgetary constraints, I was waiting until I lost at least one high beam before first. Well one high beam went out Thursday, then today the other one went out around dusk coming home today. So I went to the local auto parts store and picked up a new set of Sylvania H-4 bulbs that just happened to be on sale (saved 12 bucks). Had to clip the tabs off to get them to fit, jammed them in, hooked em up and wha la.....both high and low beams! Whew that was a relief! They seem to be a little brighter than the PIAA's I had which was a bonus too. Santa had to come a little early this year, but it sure beats having to use my bright shiny nose to find my way home through the deer infested woods round here!
