I just shipped my bike from Ohio to Phoenix, AZ, and am fixing it up. I'm doing a tune-up (filter, carb sync, plugs, valve clearance, etc), and should have it up and running soon. I was wondering though how good the VFR is on emissions. I will need to put Arizona plates on it soon before the cops start pulling me over, but before I can do that AZ requires that I pass an emissions test. I would like to not have to pay for the test more than once, so just wanted to check with the bright people of VFRWORLD to see if anyone has had the emissions tests done on this bike before, and if its going to pass with flying colors, or will I need to do some modifications, put in special fuel or additives, or do any adjustments before I go get the test done. Who has had their '92 VFR emissions tested?

Never heard of that for bikes in the US yet. It is in the works in Cali, meaning that they are thinking of a way to test bikes, rather than just require the manufacturer put on emissions equipment that will be ripped off probably at least 50-75% of the time by the owner of the bike. Thing is, even when they do, I think that there is a 99.9% chance that they will only require bikes be tested from a certain point in the future and on.

AZ DMV told you that your bike needs to pass a smog test? I cannot imagine the state of AZ making a test retroactive to test vehicles. It is always normally from the future on once the law passes.

Yeah, AZ has had the law in place for a while now. If any vehicle is more than three years old, it must pass a simple emissions test before it can be registered. When I got the renewal notice for my CBR954's tags it actually said in the renewal notice that I could not just mail the renewal in because I was required to show emissions paperwork. My CBR954 passed without any problem, I just wanted to know if anyone from Phoenix had gotten the older VFR through without a problem. I'm not sure if there is an age limit to where if a bike was built before a certain year its except from the requirement. I know really old cars don't need to pass. I'll have to look into it further. I haven't talked to the DMV yet, just gathering information in anticipation.

I lived in Phoenix and had my old shadow tested.Just get it good and warm and rev it a couple times while you wait in line. Then just turn your head when the dmv goons start reving it up.UGGGHHH the thought gives me chills.

Just checked the AZ website. This is a short list of some of there exceptions to the rule:

Please note that some exemptions apply:

    * Automobiles that are less than five years old do not need to be tested.

    * Alternative fuel automobiles whose model years fall after 2003 do not need to be tested.

    * Automobiles that were made before 1967 do not need to be tested

My VFR doesn't fit this, so yeah, I'll have to have it tested. When I had my CBR tested, the DMV guys didn't touch it. I never got off the bike. They just had me sit and idle it. I can't remember if they had me rev it at all. Whole test took like 3 mins.

I guess I will not be in any rush to move to AZ....that is just plain silly. It should be from a certain year forward, not anything more than 3 years old. Is it jus phoenix, or the whole state? I was wondering if it was just smog test based upon where you live....like the big city?

Oh, like 00VFR said....make sure it is good and warmed up. A hot engine.

It is ONLY in Maricopa County. Tuscon stopped testing motorcycles last year.
    The test is IDLE only.
My 95 passes CO fine and is always on the edge for HC. Test yours, if it fails you get 1 free retest. You will then know what you have to do to pass. Usually a high idle is all that is needed. There are shops you go to and pay for a pretest and adjust, so you pass the damn State test.
Only my H-D's have ever failed a first test.
