Got some overheating issues with my 99 VFR. I've replaced the thermostat and the fan switch on the radiator and the fan still wont come on...well it does sometimes, but it usually decides not to when I'm stuck in traffic and the temp reading is edging over 114C. So I really dont know ehre else to look.
Anyway, was just wondering how you do the paperclip in the fan switch connector trick to get the fan to run constantly? I've tried jamming one into the '2P black connector' (see pic below) and the one with the red circle around it (pic below) and it does f%ck all.
    Any help appreciated...

I had a manual switch installed so that I can turn the fan on in traffic. It didn't cost much an is very convenient. Even so it will nudge up around the 100C mark on a hot day - but the fan can hold it. These bikes do run hot, every VFR owner I ask about it tells me not to worry though!

I wouldn't advise using a paperclip in any electrical connector to "jerry rig" something at all. Especially a fan motor that can draw quite a bit current especially when it initially kicks on. My recommendation is to find the root cause. Check to see if there is power at the connector at the fan motor when it is commanded on(hot). If it does you have a faulty fan motor, which I suspect you do. You can also ride around and get it fully hot and try tapping on the fan motor case with a small hammer to see if it will kick on, that special technique will frequently work for a short time repair/diagnostic for motors such as this.

i just wanted to do a makeshift job to get it home in one piece...anyway all is good. I'm getting the fan checked out today, i too suspect it of being buggered.
So anyone got instructions on how to make a manual fan switch???

On the older VF750/VF700's the fanstat completed the ground to the fans. So you can just wire in the switch to complete the ground - instead of letting the fanstat do it. Hope this gives you a lead...
