Hi guys, I haven't posted in a while because back in September I was T-boned by a Gypsy cab that ran a stop sign. Though I was nailed quite efficiently, I was lucky to walk (limp) away with only a broken foot. My question is this. The insurance adjuster is finally coming to look at the bike tomorrow. Every fairing is cracked / smashed in some way or another all the way around the bike. The worst however is the huge hole his grill put in my crank and gear case. I assume that once those are shattered the engine has to be replaced or rebuilt. The frame and forks are all strait, and the electronic system is still working all around. Im wondering if you think this bike will be totaled and if so how much could I get for the bike in this condition. Oh yeah and the gas tank has a nice handle bar dent. Thanks for any feedback. I hope to be on the road again soon.

chances of the bike being totaled are about 97%

any pictures you could post showing engine damage??

Engine side covers (alternator and clutch) are easy and cheap to replace, but damage inside could be worse.

there's always the urge to bring your wrecked bike back into use, no matter how taped-up and cobbled-up it might appear, so do it!!

    I agree

But living in NYC without a garage or a place to tear a bike apart is not set up well for bike building. Plus the inspection is about to run out and the traffic cops will right you a whopping $185 ticket every day they catch it on the street. With monthly parking garage costs of $250 a month it makes it an un-affordable to keep around a wreck. I think Im just going to have to start over. BTW the gash in the casing is on the right side... not the left. Its pretty nasty looking...gears and shards of metal to boot. Thanks again

I assume you are talking about your '96 VFR? If so, I'd guess it's toast. But, I've rebuilt toast before, only to have a nice bike when finished. If they total it, buy a new (used) one, then buy it back!! Surely there is somewhere in the city where you could work on it. Before I bought my house (about 100 years ago) I PAINTED a Yamaha Exciter 250 in the living room of my apt! The only thing better than having a bike, is having two bikes.

Will be totaled for sure, the cost to repair will far exceed the value of the bike. And when I say value, I am refering to the value according to NADA.

Cosmetics alone will total it. The case damage just seals the deal.

A quick call to your insurance agent to find out the % of street value they draw the line at, a look at KBB value, and then an online parts fiche tabulation will tell you.

The insurance company will probably low-ball you the price of the bike.

Tell them their offer is not the market price for the bike. They will want proof.

Go to E-bay and search completed auctions for your model bike. Print out the top 3 and fax it to insurance co. They should offer you the average of all three.

Don't forget to include any gear that was damaged in the wreck.
