hello to everyone.here is what i found,1986 vf500fg interceptor it sat for ( 5 year's ) the tank is shot and the carb's are gumed up.the air box was not on the bike when i got it home, and side cover's were not there.( but went back and looked around and got them ).got a battery and all the lights and starter WORK!!!!.the crank case was FULL of oil ( and i think old gas ) no water. NOW do i try to work on the carb's myself or take them to the shop.and i NEED help to find a gas tank and gas switch ( that dont cost $300 for tank and $150 for switch).more input is welcome thank you!!!!
Before you get to the carbs, you need to determine the state of the engine. - Remove the spark plugs and spray PB Blaster of something like it into each cylinder and let it sit for a couple days. Leave the plugs out. - Shift into the highest gear and see if you can turn the rear wheel (ensure the wheel is turning the correct direction). If the wheel can turn, that means that the cylinders are not seized. If the wheel cannot turn, spray in some more PB Blaster and keep waiting and trying. -Now spray some oil into the cylinders and rotate the rear wheel several times to distribute the oil over the cylinder walls. - Drain and change the oil (paying attention to any metal in the oil) -If the carbs aren't too bad, you can clean them yourself: http://users.metro2000.net/~cdc/magna/tech section and issues/carburetors/carburetor page.htm -Once the carbs are clean, mount them to the engine and fill them with a syringe or something. -See if you can start the bike with a fully charged, new battery. The bike will run without a filter and airbox lid, but it won't run well. -If the bike starts, idles, and runs, you can work on cleaning and testing the coolant system, replacing the sprockets, chain, rebuilding the brake & clutch system, bleeding the brakes and clutch. -Now you can search E-bay for a tank. -Once the bike is road-worthy and running, change the oil, sparkplugs and coolant after 500 miles.
thank you when i hit the start button everything moved just fine.so i will work on the rest.thank you again.
