Hey there, I have been on your site for the past few months, first, researching my new bike, and secondly just keeping up with other VFR owners likes, dislikes, etc. So as you can see I bought a 2000 that was looked after quite well, and is making me very happy to have another bike. I have owned a handful of sport bikes....(all honda b.t.w.) but my last bike was a yamaha v-star. It took me a while to get used to it but once I did I liked it. Now on the VFR its amazing how much I realize I like riding this sort of bike so much more. It has become my dedicated work commuter as long as its not wet... I am in Austin TX so cold is not much of a factor, although I rode to work the only morning here there was frost on car windshields and got funny looks from people in cars. In the pics I have attached, the police bike is an officers BMW that he keeps in the fire station our ambulance is stationed... the others pics are from a day trip my work partner and I took out to the hill country. Cheers...Jeff

Didn't realise the cops used BMW's in the US for cop bikes, thought they were all Hardley's. I like those yellow VFR's, always fancied one.

Medicjeff505, nice post and congrats on the nice bike.

John O'Leary - as a side note, more and more police agencies are going with the BMW nowadays. Whether it's for longevity, maintenance issues or just reliability I'm not quite sure.

The CHP, California Highway Patrol, have been buying beemers for 7 or 8 years or more. They have to be one of, if not the, biggest buying law enforcement agency in the US.

The CHP (California Highway Patrol) has been using Kawasaki KZ900/1000's since the 70's. They put stopped making/purchasing the KZ police bike in 1999, and that is when the dept started purchasing Beemers. Some other states still use Harley's or Kawi's, but some are switching over to BMW as well.

Oh, and welcome Med! Make yourself at home!

I have been riding a Kawi Police 1000 for a year now for work and they are trash. We are slowly transitioning to the BMW's and they are a far superior motorcycle. I have spent all of my riding time on sport/touring bikes and the riding position on the Beemers is very similar. The Kawi's sit like a cruiser and its a difficult adjustment. Its a fun bike to ride for work!!!!

Honda has also entered the police bike market with the ST1300. Since Kawasaki dropped the KZ, Honda should get alot of sales in the market from smaller departments that don't want a Harley and can't afford a Beamer. Harley offers an attractive lease plan ($1000 for 1 year) but it seems to be difficult to get the dealers to renew the leases.

My brother in law was telling me about a pursuit he had of a guy driving a truck that had just broke into a house. The robber decided to get off the rode and drive through the dirt. Thinking he would would not be followed by a motrcycle. Well my B.I.L. was right behind him on the ST1300, he said there was dust everywhere and could barely make out the truck when all of the sudden from the dust cloud came a TV....that's right the truck had hit a few big bumps and the stolen 42" plasma became airborn right at my B.I.L. he said it just barely missed him.

Being a loyal Honda Junkie, I love the ST. The only issue that stops most departments is that the ST does not come with emergency equipment pre-installed by the factory, as it does on the Bimmer. That means more money and some city mechanic that can actually count past 5 must properly install the stuff. Those 2 things seem to be difficult to find in the city I work in. I can only guess that is par for the course.

    Oh yeah, Welcome!!!
