Ok, like the majority of you I assume, I want to protect my baby from scratches. I have noticed that my tank is susceptible to some marring when I use my leathers, and/or daily use. My question is: Has anybody had any experience putting on any clear 3M type plastic on their tank such as:

    http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/Sniders-Paint-Guard-p-16210.html

If so, how hard was it to apply "wrinkle-free?" If I got something like this, I guess I would like to be "model specific" to apply uniform and easily so.

I have been tossing the idea of clear 3M type (from various manufacturer's), or going with this (Mag-Knight):

    http://www.mag-knight.com/Tank Bra.htm

I talked to someone who tried it, and they said that no dirt gets in between the magnet and paint to mar it.

Anybody have any experience and/or input? Oh, and I am 100% against a leather tank bra. Just my preference.

No experience, but the 3M product looks like it may work. I swear Motorcycle Consumer News gave a positive review.

FWIW, everytime I own something and try and keep it from getting scratched...it gets scratched! I bought a tank pad and never put it on, whats the point!?

I hear you Bubba...I know my bike will keep getting scratched, and it has....however, if I can prolong her beauty by giving her a little extra protection I will be happy. I am not gonna go insane and 3M the whole bike, but I figure the tank always has my pants/leathers rubbing on it, so why not give her a little protection?

BTW, are you taking about the tank pad to protect from belt buckles & zippers? Put dat sucka on there!

Thanks bro! Hey, did you buy it pre-cut, or did you have to cut it to shape? How hard was it to form it to the bends? Did you have to use a hairdryer much?

Well, I don't mind the half-tank bra as much, but the full tank bra kills me.

That is what I was worried about, fudging the 3M stuff up and throwing it straight in the trash. That is why I was looking at the magnetic tank thingy.

I use a kit from thetankslapper.com. I also wear leathers a lot of the time minus jeans for commuting. It holds up pretty well and I ride and hang off the bike on the agressive side. I bought it for the reasons you are describing, protection! I put a lot of miles on my bikes so I try to keep them looking as good as possible. If you get the full kit, it comes with pre-cut protection for the rear cowl as well.

Only problem is there kit doesn't come with protection for the front cowl which is what I REALLY wanted.

Yeah, those guys are local to me, I talked to one of them last year. He told me he would charge me like 10 bucks if I wanted to bring the bike in for him to do it.

That is a static film, right? If so, does it move around? I think that was my concern.

I've got the tankslapper protection on mine as well. You can barely see it. I have not had a problem with it sliding or coming loose, even when I washed the bike.

Check out this clear protection as well, I had on the C14 and it goes on quite easy and is very hard to tell it is on there. The big plus is you can remove and reuse. I have it on order for the viffer.

Obviously I did not read the whole thread, but the guys are right this is a really good product and it does not move around.

One of my friends works at a tint shop where they also do the clear bra's for most of the high end car dealers (they were doing a Viper while I was there). I brought the bike in and he did the raised portion on the top of the tank pulse the sides of the tank with the clear bra stuff. I already had a tank protector on the back of the tank. I've had it for about a year now and it still looks great.

I've put the Snider's Product film on my tank and the rear for protection from my boots when I get on/off of bike. I also carry a small cooler to work and it slides back some so it helps with that also. The kind I bought you have to trace and cut which may sound hard, but it's easy and it works great. I have done about 10 bikes and like anything else you get better at it, however I have never had to just throw away and start over. I would say give it a shot because it's not that expensive and I'm positive you can do it.

I have the 3M film from a car dealership too. They put it on in about a half hour and its barely visible. I use the Honda spray polish to clean it.... that stuff works great and makes your paint look better than new.

I know this is a late reply but I did the Snider's clear protection too. Once it was on I found it was great but it does require some patience and fiddling. It is inexpensive and comes off easily. I wish I had found the stuff before I put 160 miles on the bike though because just that small amount of time caused some rub marks on the tank.

You can barely see it when it is on!

I have yet to put a tank condum or fairing bra on my bike. She does fine without either and so far, not problems with little unicycles popping up in the garage. No sticky mess when you roll or peel off the thing. I just wax her bits regularly and she looks fresh as a Spring morning.

Maybe when she's older I'll regret riding her so hard unprotected, but she's not complaining and I like the au-natural feeling.

Does this make me a pig?

No they have another word for that Noz. How you ever managed to so eloquently take a tank protection thread and turn it into that might indicate a need of another sort......:)

Well if you'd quit hugging the tank so hard it, wouldn't get scratched. ever try baby powder? no really thou I know what you mean. thing is and I hardly have any, but some really fine ones that only show up in the right sun light. trick is to keep it clean in the first place and be aware of what you have on like zippers and the like.
