The choke cable on the VFR broke the other day. Do I need to buy a specific type of cable for the replacement>?
You should be able to make any cable with the proper barrel size work. It's likely it broke from lack of lube, so you'll want to replace the housing too, not just slip in another cable to get damaged among the fragged pieces and tube. I don't own your gen bike, but I bet a replacemnt from the local bicycle shop is possible.
I have a 1985, which is one gen before yours, but my choke cable is in the process of breaking too. It got stuck open due to kinks in the cable, I have fixed that problem temporarily, but it is also halfway frayed and about to break. I special ordered the OEM replacement from a bike shop here in Austin, I will get it in a week, and it is the exact replacement. It was about $25, which I think is worth it for the proper equipment. Anyway, Im not sure about yours, but my choke cable has special little ball attachments on each end that slide into the connection points. The cable is also a specific length. I would recommend against trying to use a bicycle cable or any other cable not intended for your bike unless you are lucky enough to find one that is identical to the original. On that note, do you think I should write up a picture enhanced how to for changing the cable once mine gets in, I will be doing the maintenance anyway, the only difference is my girlfriend with a camera.
You might as well order a damned voltage regulator too, you could need another one tomorrow..............
