Resonators

What is the purpose of the resonators inside the airbox?

 

I believe they are used to tune out certain frequencies for a more even air flow. Resonators go back to the ancient Greeks, they used urns filled with rocks to reduce certain frequencies that resonated in their amphitheaters, to improve speech. I wouldn't remove them, not going to improve performance.

Definition: "A Helmholtz resonator is a device that consists of a cavity and a neck, which vibrates at a specific natural frequency when air is forced in and out of it."

We can assume the resonators here are designed to improve the speech of the engine in the airbox amphitheatre. It's all Greek to me, anyway.

 

I wasn’t planning on removing them. Just a little perplexed seeing them.

Did some reading on Helmholtz resonators, pretty amazing technology.

 

Years ago I thought I would be cool and "modify" my air box by opening it up, removed the snouts and drill holes. No improvement and louder. Hard to improve on the original engineers. We were always looking for ways to customize and improve performance, and make the bike lighter, then I realized it would be easier for me to lose 50lbs! My 2014 VFR Deluxe is stock except for the foot pegs and bar risers, which improved my comfort level and enjoyment. More than enough performance for me. I can't think of another bike I would rather have.
