I came across a 1991 VFR 2 months ago. An 18 yr old with zero experience pays 8400.00 for it as his first bike. I have receipts showing he had $1900.00 of work performed the prior month, including "reman" carbs (I have my doubts), new front and rear tires absolutely new.

First ride, 20 feet out of his driveway he lays it on his side. A little bit of scuffing on the left side, mid fairing smashed. Yet, beautiful bike. I gave him the $800.00 even though I couldn't hear it run.

Didn't know much about these, but I was raised in the 90's so I love big body sport bikes/tourers.

Got it home, the starter made a racket. Pulled it off, bench tested. Ok.

I downloaded the manual. Concluded it was the starter clutch. After it arrived, installed it, added fuel. Hit the start, click. I knew from automotive experience it was hydro locked. Pulled plugs cylinders were full of fuel. Checked petcock. It was leaking while closed so I knew I had an issue with the float's. Went ahead and started it. Ran like a champ, but obviously rich.

I have also replaced the fuel pump and the voltage regulator.

Pulled carbs, went thru manual found they were to be set at 7 MM. Set them and put new float valves in, but made the error of not bench testing. With them installed and synced started it.

Now I have fuel dumping into two cylinders. Pulled three times until I finally set them at 12 MM before I no longer had fuel dumping and it will run. Other than starting it, I haven't really ran it because this was last night about midnight before I got them on.

I didn't measure the throats size. The carbs were obviously changed or at least cleaned. They were pristine.

I know I have spoke to much. But, why would I have to set all the carbs so high? Wrong year carbs? I even performed the clear line on the drain to check float levels. But I'm not sure on a 45 degree engine where to read where the fuel levels out at. The fuel levels right at where the screw to open drain is.

I'm just baffled what to do with the floats. Clearly I want it to run right.

OHH, ANYONE have a left mid fairing they want to sell?

Please describe your method for measuring float height and what tool(s) you are using.
