Hey guys, I have been having electrical issues with my 05 Vfr. About a year ago I put this aftermarket rectifier from RM Stator on the bike in an attempt to keep the stator from dying around the 30,000 mile mark like you hear about them doing. This worked fine until recently, the stator finally burned up completely and I replaced it with an OEM part but didn't replace the aftermarket rectifier that I had on the bike. I thought the bike was charging after replacing the stator, learned it was not when it died on me. Then, when attempting to recharge the bike something shorted very badly and killed all the electronics on the bike down to the clock. I checked all the fuses I could locate including the small panel in the front cowl and what seems to be the main power fuse beside the battery. I have not located and checked the starter relay yet, but I would assume the starter relay going out would only stop the bike from turning over and not completely kill the electronics. So I definitely fried my ECU right? Thats the only thing I can imagine that would cause complete electrical death other than cooked main power wires and they all seem to be fine. I plan on finding the pinout chart for the ECU and testing the input and output voltages and I expect that I will find power is making it in and not out. I found some replacement ECUs on Ebay but had a hard time confirming if they were for my specific year of bike, would an 04 be close enough? Can you just put the new ECU in without any issues? Thank you for your consideration

You need to locate the starter relay. Pretty sure the Main Fuse is located on the housing on your model and would kill power to the whole bike as you describe, and should have popped if you f-d up and shorted something in your attempt to "recharge".

And you need to also locate an Owner's Manual and Service Manual.

A fried ECU would not stop lights etc working.

Either primary fuse or you completely discharged the battery.

burned/melted main fuse holders are problems sometimes.

What aftermarket regulator?? RM? I'd be checking that charging voltage first thing, likely way high. Suggest you upgrade to a Shindengen regulator....

The starter relay and main fuse are co-located under the seat. If the main fuse there blows, there is no power to anything, including the clock.

Thanks for the help guys, the red main fuse housing that is a part of the wiring harness melted but I cant find a replacement online. Does anyone know where or if I can find one without buying an entire harness for one connector?

I buy replacements off eBay and solder into the harness, trimming back any corroded/burnt wiring.
