    Hello dear VFR fans!

First of all, I would like to apologize for opening a new post, but I couldn't really find a problem similar to mine among the existing posts.

My motorcycle just had its valve clearance adjusted. My mechanic said my thermostat was stuck open, so he replaced it with a factory one. I warmed it up and took it out for a short ride today (about 30-40 kilometers) and noticed that the temperature gauge was between 67 and 73 degrees (153-164 degrees Fahrenheit) at around 80-90 kilometers per hour (50-56 mph). In traffic it went up nicely to between 80-85 degrees (176-185 degrees Fahrenheit). The thermostat must be good because when stationary the radiator is cold until the thermostat reaches the opening temperature. My fan is not running all the time either. The outside temperature was about 14-16 degrees (57-61 degrees Fahrenheit) and there was a cold wind blowing. Everything is perfect by the way, the VTEC was also kicking in nicely.

Is this temperature normal compared to the outside temperature, or is my temperature sensor messing up?

Thanks in advance for your answers, and sorry for my bad English! :)

I believe your bike temps are very good! Whatever you are doing, keep it up!

    Thanks for your answer!

I'm just a little confused because this is my first motorcycle and my thermostat has been bad so far, so I have no basis for comparison as to what the good running temperature is for the engine. I started from the fact that even with a bad thermostat it always kept the temperature stable around 80 degrees (175 fahrenheit) outside the city, although in traffic it quickly jumped above 105 degrees (222 fahrenheit). Since I've only had a car so far, I thought that if the thermostat is good it would keep it warmer, which is why the value around 70 degrees (158 fahrenheit) seemed strange to me. So when warmer weather comes, I think the temperature will creep up a bit.

its normal for temps to rise sharply in stop-and-go traffic. just be sure the fan kicks in when necessary.

if you drained the coolant and refilled, best to check fluid level again at the radiator cap after bike has cooled from the first ride. cap might need replacement if its old.

if proper operating temp doesnt happen after 1/2 hour of riding, the thermostat may be stuck partly-open, something not too uncommon.

The opening temperature of the stock thermostat is around 78C so that is the lowest that the bike should operate at if the conditions are cold. For the engine to be sitting between 67 and 73C suggests to me that the new thermostat may not be correctly seated/sealed in the housing. Both my 99 and 09 VFRs sit right around 78-80C under most steady conditions, and only go higher under slow conditions when there is little airflow to the side-mount radiators.

This is just strange because until now I've always had good temperatures with a bad thermostat. Then I'll have to take the whole thing apart, it'll be amazing. If I remember correctly, you need a very long screwdriver to remove the throttle body?

I have a screwdriver that is about 600mm that is great for this job. You should be able to just swing the throttle bodies clear with the electrical and throttle cables attached if all you want to do is access the thermostat area.

I haven't tear it apart already, but it will be the brand new OEM thermostat... After starting the engine, both of the radiators slowly heating up, so the thermostat is open, what a waste of money, i spent 78 bucks for a piece of shit. :)
