I'm looking at both a 5th gen and a 4th gen for sale. Both have around 40,000 miles on them. I'd like to get an idea of what pricing is for both generations in today's world. I had a '98 VFR800 5 years ago and obviously getting on another VFR. I've noticed prices have gone up or stayed the same over the years. I got my old '98 with 19k miles on it in 2018 for $3,200.

The two bikes I'm looking at, 4th and 5th gens, are both $3k+ with 35,000+ miles on them.

I'd like to know, what are the average prices for both generations, both average maintenance history, with 30k+ miles in today's world? I don't want to over pay if I don't have too.

    Thanks

Mods? Known issues? Tires alone will cost you a few hundred if one needs them and the other doesn't. Has the charging issue been sorted on the 5th gen yet? I'm not sure there's a simple number. I'm trying to get rid of carbs with the crap fuel available here, so I'd go 5th all of the way.

Electrical has been sorted on both bikes in terms of R/R. I'm just wondering if $3,000+ for either generation with 35,000+ miles is considered over paying. I'm leaning towards the 5th gen(s) as well (again). I'm near Charlotte NC, so maybe I'll see you around.

Without detailed, hi-res pics it's impossible to say. A nice, well sorted 4th Gen can justifiably go over 3K, even with that mileage. With a documented, proper service history, mileage is almost irrelevant on that engine. Got a friend with 150K+ and it still runs like new. I am not exaggerating.

Counter point: Shit fuel (really any fuel) eventually rears it's ugly head when stored improperly in any bike. It just takes a little longer in the FI bike. All of my carb bikes still run fucking great on 87 OCT 10% ETH, especially my 95.

While my Winterization requirements are stupidly extreme, for sane people it doesn't take much time to pull the mid fairings and drain the carbs at the end of the riding season. Now crank full throttle with the kill switch and fuel off... done. You just have to remember to do it.

Absolutely! When I'm not dying with a migraine, I'm riding something. :)

Those prices look pretty reasonable to me. I bought my 99 a couple of years ago for the equivalent of $3400, and it came with some nice suspension goodies and was in great shape so I was happy with that. I would pay a similar amount for a 4th gen in the same condition. Both are going to be hard to find bodywork for as they were in production for a similar time (4 years) and at 25-odd years old you may have similar issues with both. I would not rule out a 6th gen either as they are much more plentiful (10+ years production) and younger.

I've located non-ethenol fuel, and now use it for all my carb'ed motors, lawnmower, 2 dirt bikes, VFR and 73 C10 pickup. And I use it in my 84 944, even though it has FI. its 60 cents a gallon more than crap 10% ethanol. and I no longer have "bad gas" issues. www.pure-gas.org

That's the ticket. Starts to go bad in years, not days. About the same cost at 93 here in NC.

I feel your pain. Used to get them real bad. Turns out after about 10 years I discovered they were caused by cinnamon

My grandmother got them. My dad has had them forever. I started in my late 20s. Cinnamon is on my list, but I think it is more about the things made with it. Food is a big trigger. I've been able to manage a bit better the last few years, but they suck. Completely incapacitated when I get them, usually 2-4 days. Normal people don't understand.
