Tying up loose ends today starting with the mirrors. I was going to buy new ones, but they are hard to find and expensive. Mine had broken plastic arms and scratched fronts, but the glass is good. We started using a plastic welder last year and that thing is amazing. Easy to use and makes really strong repairs.

I’m using JB Weld as plastic body filler after the staples are melted into the cracked plastic. It sands well. That’s how I repaired all the broken body panels. For the scratches I’m just using top coat bondo.

While that’s drying I’m making some cups to hold the lower fairings together at the bottom. 1/8” TIG weld rod seems to be working well.

I think you are referring to the R/W/B color scheme. Your 86 has the square gauges, which means it had to start life as a VFR700FII in Pearl Crescent White.

Usually you can find the bike's factory color code if you remove the seat - it's right there towards the back. This is the one on the recent Blue bike I obtained from Georgia.....an '87....... IMG_8723.JPG

This from my White '86.....square gauges.......

It’s hard to say where this bike started. When I got it it had the round gauges minus the speedo. I couldn’t find the speedo so I bought the square gauges. Then I realized that the cowl mount that came with the bike had been modified to fit the round gauges.

most of the bodywork was the R/W/B covered up by rattle can white.

this is my color code sticker, but who knows if it was original to the bike.

    Ok... that makes more sense.

There are two styles of upper cowl stays, one for each gauge package.

    R/W/B "F" model.

You likely had a bit (bunch) of wiring changes to incorporate the square gauges.

That was my buddy’s idea. Works out well and easy to make.

The gauges were fine, but the fuse box plugs were opposite. I had to pull the wiring from the fuse box on the round gauge setup and transplant it into the fuse carrier for the square gages.

that was another one where a buddy told me to do that and I blew him off thinking it wouldn’t work, but it worked out great.

The upper triple clamp has the fuse box mounts?

So, the upper cowl stay had the three gage mounts (in a triamgle) for the square gages, but had then been modified for round gages?

Aaaaaahhhhhhhh. Yep. It gets convoluted. Way more changes than you would think. Nice.

I can’t find much for these bikes on-line and I’m missing two brackets for the left lower fairing and one for the right.

I spent some time making some up today. Getting closer.

    Nice work.

Please tell me you're not gonna use the battery bolt for the final fitment of the bracket to the frame. ;-)

And... what type of oil are you running? ;-) ;-)

No. I bought a stainless bodywork kit out of England, but it is missing many parts. I still need to get the large Duz fasteners and misc. parts. Those don't need to be stainless, but I still need to get some decent ones.

My buddy I bought it from put the synthetic in there, but I don't know what kind. I generally run Rotella T6 15-40 in most of my Japanese bikes.

I was joking. "Somehow" I knew it had synthetic.

    Again, good job so far.

Got everything sorted out and body is mounted solid. I want to ride it, but the tachometer seems to be reading double the actual rpm. I did swap out gauges, but the ignition system is the same. I don’t know why it would be different.

Anyone seen this before or know why?

    Perhaps those are 1987 gauges?

The ignition systems are different 86 to 87. The pulse coil pickup triggers were changed on the starter clutch housing and they switched from analog to digital ignition.

Thank you. I forgot I still have the tach that came on the bike. I only switched the instruments because I could not find a replacement speedo for the round gauges and when I saw that the cowl frame that holds the gauges had been modified to fit the round gauges I thought the square ones were correct. Of course then I ran into the fuse wiring harness issue and swapped out the origins fuse wiring into the gauge mounted fuse box housing.

    wheeew that a lot
