I have no idea why I thought I would be assembling the clutch today. The IDIOT (me) who apparently bought the cheapest, shittiest gasket available when replacing the shift shaft and spindle, spent Friday night and all Sunday afternoon scraping the concrete remains off of the crankcase and cover. JFC.

Well, mating surfaces are clean, new frictions are soaking, steels got one more round of Figure-8s and cleaned up.

Thanks for passing along a reminder about cost vs value.

I'm as frugal as they come but would also like to think I understand that there are some things not worth cutting cost corners on!

    Carry on Capt.....

Well shit, I went back thru this thread and I HAD replaced the frictions. (great record keeping there, dumb-ass) So I am really looking forward to a new clutch spring. I will save the "old" frictions for the VF1000F.

Clutch is buttoned up. Lever feel is real nice.

One thing I'll say is that because the spring has higher lift to begin with, make sure the last splined piece is straight and as seated as possible before tightening and torquing the clutch nut. It is engaging just a little less and it kinda wanted to cock a little sideways the first time I hand started the nut. But after I paid attention and felt/watched closely, the spring drove down and the piece seated perfectly.

"Pro-tip": On the 1000, the easiest way to hold the transmission/clutch when removing/installing the clutch nut is to put it in gear and wedge a chunk of 2x4 into the rear sprocket, top or bottom depending on which way you need to stop it. Easy, doesn't damage anything and works great.

    Can't wait to sample it.

sixdog, I modded your spring today.

After finishing the Element wheels I wanted something small and fun. So I made some little infill panels for the bare side cover brackets.

    PXL_20241223_020443544.jpg

I also blacked out the little brackets in the upper corners to help them blend in a bit. You can scroll up thru some of the previous pics for the "before".

    PXL_20241223_020458406.jpg

Looks better from a little more distance. Kinda diggin' it more and more. The original side covers were still decent and I am saving those for another project, and this bike is so modified it can have this treatment instead. I heated them up with a heat gun after mounting to help mold them more flush with the frame.

Thanks. Contemplated going a little bigger and complex, but that would have been a real project creating additional mounts. And this REALLY needs to get off the lift.

    I have 2 lifts

One is Urgent Care ( oil changes and stuff that will take a few hours )
The other lift is ICU ( big jobs )

They do take up space but it works out great

I replaced clutch plates this year, I didn't soak the friction discs before, just coated with oil & installed. For the first month, the bike would stall every time I shifted from neutral to 1st.

OK. Element wheel & tire project done, so one more fun little project before getting back into some real shit.

Came up with this idea couple weeks ago. Using the stays from some super rashed 86 VFR mirrors for some GoPro mounts.

    PXL_20241227_015747643.jpg

Created some aluminum plates to get maximum 3M contact patch for the base. Drilled and tapped the stays to bolt on the mount.

    PXL_20241227_015910908.jpg

    PXL_20241227_015952126.jpg

I will run some bar end mirrors and mount a couple cameras to test how the mount works as far as vibration. The idea was really for the 86 VFR750F track bike, but this will be a good test. If it works, I may mod the VFR mirrors on this bike to take some mounts too.
