TGiving is over, me and the little woman are again alone. I am back in the shop. Rode the 86 around the block a couple times, going to work on the front end this week. Tires arrived will be getting those on. I am picking up on some more things to look at. I am noticing that the bike starts to smoke more as it warms up? None when cold. What else can cause smoke out the pipes? Once thought it could be the carb cleaner. I have witnessed that on other vehicles in the past. Starts easy, and will idle smoothly once it warms up. Prior to warming up it will not always run smoothly. On the road it pulls very strong and smoothly through the gears (even sixth!). It is somewhat balky in first right off the line, but not always. I am going to get to connecting my gauges up to see where she is once I figure out where everything plugs in and what tool(s) I need to actually make the adjustment. The smoking worries me some. Probably ought to hunt down a compression testor. Any suggestions would be helpful. I am not sure what you get with the random cheapies on Amazon. Plugs are not the easiest to get at, and hate to risk stripping anything with shitty threaded fittings!

    Later!

While a compression test can never hurt, but I wouldn't fret about the smoking until you have had the bike out on the open road, up to full operating temperature, for at least 40 minutes or more. Those VF collectors like to... collect... all the errant fluids and oils that have been thrown at them and leaked down intake tracts form bad carbs. Personally seen it many times. Takes a while, at hot temps, to burn all that shit out.

Not saying you don't have a problem. And to get the bike where it can be safely ridden in that manner is gonna mean continuing to put the money into making it road worthy. Which you already have, just not finished the work.

    Keep on keepin' on.

Those words are music to my ears. I was suspicious when it smoked, as it also smelled like burnt fruit? Similar to the smell from the glop that I emptied from the gas tank. I also see some wet condensate where the muffler clamps to the collector. It dries up as the bike cools down. Thanks for the word. I will get the fork seals replaced and the new rubber on the road. If weather permits I will get up to highway speed for an hour or so then report back.

    Thanks again,
