I've got a 99 5th generation VFR800. How often do I need to lubricate the chain? If it makes a difference the bikes is kept outside (under a good quality breathable cover) in England. cheers guys.
Out of the blue, I would say every 300-400 miles in dry conditions, and maybe more considering your riding conditions (rain/snow/mud, etc). If you ride in a lot of rain, maybe weekly. You can look at it to see how dry and/or dirty it looks. It is good to periodically (you usually do not need to do this each time you lube it, but check the chaing for build up and assess it from there) clean your chain with a solvent and brush before you relube it. Kerosene (or WD-40 works pretty good as well, and I use it quite a bit) is the primary choice. Oh, and as a personal choice, I stay away from chain wax...it just builds up, picks stuff up and hold it all on to your chain to grind it round and round. Just not a fan. Use your own judgement though.
Got your solution. Its called a Scottoiler, an automatic chain lubrication system that runs from your engine vacuum, and better for you they are close by, they are made in Glasgow. I have had one fitted to my 2001 VFR from new and am still on the same chain and sprockets after 78,000 kms (48,000 miles). I have a mate who also has one and he has done 168,000kms (104,000 miles). Very easy to install and saves you a heap of money.
Major chain cleaning and relube every 1000 miles, relube every 500, and I lube it at every gas stop gas stop if I am riding in the rain. I tend to get lots of life out of them, and they are certainly and expense to replace.
