on most engine oil filters, tightening by hand is recommended.

Most say 2/3 to 1 turn from when the O-ring touches, usually on a sticker on the filter. Remember to ensure the old O-ring is off!

I have one but use it only to remove. Seems those filters tighten themselves up after the install. I follow the hand tight method that has worked for me in the 230,000 km I have on the bike. I did strip the oil drain plug once though. I don't remember where I bought mine but they are readily available. JSYK. The filters on our machines are the practically the same as those used on Honda cars. The only difference is that the filters used on the cars are slightly longer. I have been using Bosch Honda Car filters, that exceed OEM specs, and sometimes available on sale at Walmart for more than half the cost of OEM, for a very long time.

So a visit to a tool store like KMS, Lordco NAPA or Princess Auto may surface a tool far cheaper than OEM.

I also have a 2016 Honda Fit and a small stash of Bosch Filters (as I do my own maintenance on it as well). I was amazed at how similar in size (except length) they are to the VFR oil filters. Thank you for confirming my suspicions, I look forward on saving a few bucks by purchasing the same filters for both. In terms of cost, I've noticed the price of the car filter is about half of the price of the one for the bike.

Know that fit and function aren't the same thing. You'll want to verify a match for both.

Canister size can affect oil level, of course.

Filtration is quite different across different mediums, both in what it filters (microns), and how much material there is to filter.

Oil drain back valve, yes or no?

The best oil filter comparison is old now, so newer filters aren't on there, but you can learn a lot from a site like this:

Yes they fit well. On my 06, I need to use very little effort to move the coolant hose a bit to get it on. But the Africa Twin is another matter. I have to get the expensive OEM as there is metal frame that gets in the way trying to use the car filter on that one. I've been trying to find out if I can get a Bosch that is the same as OEM but haven't had much luck that way
