Right guys, an update. Some not so good and some definitely good.

So I replaced all the coils. I was then able to get a cam sensor NOS from CMSNL but I couldn’t get new pulse generators at all. I took them out and inspected them and they seemed really clean, so put them back in.

I also came across a second hand spark unit which had apparently been tested, so bought it, and at the same time learnt that my rc24 had an additional electronic box attached to the spark unit that was specifically for the JDM bikes (which mine is) so removed that as well. Buttoned it all back up together and after spending a good few more hundred pounds, yes, it cut out on me again within about 10 minutes. Back to the drawing board again.

So I was having a dig around the internet and just putting in loads of different search terms about VFRs cutting out and I got directed to a thread on this very site, focusing on the fuel cut off relay. Read through it and it started to ring some bells. The fuel relay on my bike has always just been loose with the holder long gone. I had bought a new pattern relay a long while ago but never got around to fitting it as the pin connectors were different and the company I had bought it from simply refused to tell me which pin was which! The upshot of all this is that I forgot about the relay. So I decided to remove the relay. Yes, I know it’s a safety device but atm, I’m more concerned about the bike cutting out on me in the fast lane of the motorway, so managing risk and all that. A couple of weeks ago I spent 20 minutes cutting, soldering and insulating and what a difference. I noticed straightaway the fuel pump was priming longer, which suggested to me that maybe the relay was faulty and potentially cutting the pump intermittently. When I thought back to my bike cutting out, it would always restart after a minute or so of hitting the starter and I’m wondering if the relay being faulty (or the signal
wire from the ignition system was faulty) would mean the float bowls run dry and then as soon as I start priming them again with the starter, she fires up!?

Anyway, since doing this, she’s run perfectly, coming up to almost 600 miles without cutting out. I think maybe, just maybe, I’ve finally got a reliable bike.

Last weekend I took her along to the local museum at Brooklands and was able to park her under another example of fantastic engineering.

I’m planning on a long day out, hopefully next week. Going to ride from my home in South West London and get to Thorpe Abbots in Norfolk, where the USAAF 100th bomb group were based (Masters of the air etc). They still have a museum there, that I have wanted to visit for sometime. I’m a lot more confident that I can get there and then get home. Let’s see!

Glad you made some progress hopefully. Your previous descriptions made it sound like ignition cutting out, not running out of fuel sputtering.

    Enjoy!

Sometimes it would run rough for 10-20 seconds before coming to a stop. Pretty much replaced or removed everything that it could have been, now. Will see I’ve got my fingers crossed!

You were at the motorcycle show we had at Brooklands! I'm a member of the motorcycle team, shame I didn't know you'd be there.
For our US friends, Brooklands is the world's first purpose built motor racing circuit, and home to much of the Uk's motoring and aviation heritage.

That’s very cool, Tony. What a fantastic place Brooklands is. I always love going there. Had a very memorable ride in an old MG about 10 years ago, hanging onto my daughter as we went around what was left of the banked track. Even at a modest speed it was a lot of fun.

@rc24dk, thank you! Still don’t know why I can’t post pics on here; it’s very frustrating.

Anyway, last Wednesday I did 400 miles in one day and the VFR didn’t miss a beat. I rode around the outskirts of London and headed up to Norfolk and Suffolk to visit Thorpe Abbotts. A brilliant museum which remembers ‘the bloody 100th’ Bomb Group who were stationed there in WW2. Not much left of the airfield left but the local volunteers have renovated the control tower into a museum. There’s a little bit of the perimeter track left and it is wonderfully evocative of what went on there 80 years ago.

Then rode on to a small motorcycle museum just outside Cromer. Would you believe it but the guy who owns the museum was actually selling a RC24! Think he was having a hard time shifting it.

Got back home late in the evening. A really fab day out, with no mechanical or electrical issues at all. My knees were quite sore at the end from being stuck in the riding position, but nothing that could not be walked off. Very happy.

Are you trying to link to hosted photos using the "Image" button above? This site doesn't seem to like that and they won't show to the reader unless they "Reply", then they see them in your "Quote".

Use the "Upload a File" button below and choose a locally stored photo from your phone or computer.

Well then, I got nothin'. Those are the scenarios where it doesn't and does work for me.

Congrats on the trouble free miles lately. Happy for you.

I successfully posted a picture on my dating thread, as I have had problems in the past with pictures downloaded to my computer from my phone not always being a jpeg, I drag the picture to my desktop, (that ensures it is in jpeg format), then on here I hit 'attach an image'. But, instead of 'choose file', I drag the picture from my desktop into that field, and used the 'main image' button. It worked ok.
I expect those who are tech-savvy are thinking what a mess, but it only takes a few seconds and it does work

The Upload a File button next to the Post Reply button allows multiple file types but there is a size limit. For many years, most sites auto resize, but not all of them. When they don't auto resize, I usually open them in paint, resize, save as on desktop (so I can quickly delete it) as it is an easy way to do it.

Chaps, I’m loading photos on my phone using the iPhone app (don’t have a desktop or laptop computer ar home). Maybe that’s the issue, although it always used to work when I started this thread.

Anyway, thanks for sharing the pics so that others can see them. I’ll investigate obtaining a computer and using that in the future.

    Thanks all!

The linking an image path used to work too, so there's that. Something changed about a year ago or so on the site's forum software and how it handles certain photos.
