Unfortunately you chose a bike which most parts are unavailable. Likely the oil pump was fine but these bikes suffered cam/follower failures due to their design which Honda changed in later VFR models. Most people buy ebay used parts to get these running again. As a learning experience the teardown might be useful but its likely to become a money sink without a final good result.

Ive torn most of the bike down rn. The top end of the engine looks good. And I'll finish putting the oil pump on today. probably wont have time to put it back together and test run. But nothing on the inside looked wornout.

I got the bike back together and running. The oil pump replaced and the bike is running. I re-built the carbs while i had them off. This bike is super fun to drive. It reminds me of my K100 just a little lighter. Thanks to everyone who commented on this forum!!

So, i got the bike running but i think the water pump is broken too. In other news, the guy I bought the bike from has a friend with a '85 VF500F for sale. He says its running but has a knock. probably in one of the rods, he's selling for 900 which is kinda enticing. were their any problems with the 85 models?

MANY parts are different between 85 and 86, mostly the engine. 86 is a better engine with line bored cam journals.
