I'm looking to swap the front end of my 5th gen with a VTR1000 front end. I've found a plethora of threads on using the VTR lowers but can't find anything on swapping the complete front end, triple tree and all. Has anyone done this and were there any issues? I'd like to avoid using spacers for the fender and caliper, when using just the VTR lowers. Thanks!

Dude... the VTR triples wont work on a 5th gen if you are planning to use the 5th gen wheel/rotors etc....
The fork spacing is not wide enough. Need to use 5th gen triples.

Thanks Mello Dude. I was thinking that using the VTR axle and spacers would solve the wheel fitment issue.

Swapping triples might also change the fork offset, and could well affect the function of the steering lock.

You should also measure the disc spacing between a VFR and VTR; I suspect you'll find the VTR discs are closer together to match the narrower fork spacing, so the VFR wheel may have insufficient clearance if used with VTR triples.

Terry. thanks for the input. From what I could find, the steering angle and trail for the VFR are 25.5/100 and for the VTR 24.9/97. I measured the disk spacing and the VFR is 5.25" and VTR 5.00", that's just eyeballing it with a tape measure. So what Mello Dude said is correct, I wouldn't be able to use the VFR wheel/ rotors. I'll see what I can figure out with the steering lock.

Curiousity kills the cat.... why are you seemingly set on converting to all VTR gear? (If I am getting you right?)

Well, I have a VTR parts bike sitting in my garage and figured I'd look into using the whole VTR front end to avoid caliper spacers and needing a fender bracket. Stupid me, I should have measured the disk spacing for the two bikes before I posted. I just assumed the spacing between the disks were the same. I could just go ahead and use the VTR wheel and disks but I have an F4i wheel that I planned to using. So I guess I'll just stick with the tried and true VTR lowers with the VFR triple. Now if I can just find someone to make fender brackets! Lol

And unfortunately I am out of the fender brackets biz....

Another tidbit...rumor has it the F4i and VFR800 wheel are the same dimensions....
    I don't know that for a fact....

Thanks, I'll search around and see if I can find the thread. I read somewhere that the F4i wheel will fit the VFR and is supposedly lighter. I haven't weighed them yet.

On another note, I the steering head on the VFR is quite a bit beefier than on the VTR. The steering stops on the VFR are about an inch farther apart than on the VTR. It looks like one would have to grind the stops off of the VTR steering stem to be able to use it on the VFR. Yet another reason not to go the VTR front end route.

Hi. I didn't see this post before now :)
Do you need any help with the front fender brackets?

Good Luck! I thought about buying a printer but I don't know anything about them.

I can print them for you and mount the brass heat inserts, if you want. But I think the postage to the US is quite expensive plus perhaps some tax handling. A local print service might be a cheaper option...

If you want to buy a printer, I can recommend Bambu lab. But you need an enclosed printer to be able to print the parts in ASA or ABS. I wouldn't print in PLA, since PLA creeps under pressure quite fast, so the mudguard might come loose after a few weeks.

Welcome to the wonderfull world of 3D printing! If you learn to use your printer and some 3D design tools, you will wonder how you could ever be without one in your workshop :)
I often print stuff just to help me in my private hobby workshop.
    Heres an example:
    https://www.printables.com/model/909966-5th-gen-vfr800-balancer-adapter
And there are much more stuff out there...
I have build 3 custom made 3D printers, because it is my hobby, and I'm also using standard printers at work, So, I will probably be able to answer most questions that you might have.
But since others are probably also having questions regarding inserts, I have updated my thingiverse description with more details on this:
    https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6640501
    Happy printing!

Hi Miguel thanks for the offer. How much would it be for you to make a set? I was looking at the Bambu labs printers and it looks like the cheapest enclosed printer is $599. Maybe if I learn more, or rather anything, about 3D printing I'll go for it. Thanks!
