I have a DMR F2 shock for the VF500. The mod style should be identical. It is on a shelf and I can take some pics later.

Wish I could find one of those. Is it hard to modify?

I'll post up some pics later.

The machining is not that complicated, but work holding to be square and your passes are fairly critical for an important part that is being modded. There is some opportunity to end up with a good shock for a good price if you have (or access to) the machining equipment and skill.

These mods started in the inbetween-times, when interest was still high, but aftermarket support/inventory was low to non existent, and/or expensive. For many people, the allure of a much better shock than stock, at a price lower than a Fox TC or Ohlins (if you could find one), was valid.

To REALLY make the the CBR shock right it should be re-valved too for the correct spring and bike. So these days, when you are all done you're not far away from a very nice, superior (over stock or CBR) YSS shock.

Ok, thanks for the info. Seriously doubt I'll ever find one of those modded anyway.

You might be surprised... Sometimes when breakers tear them down, they don't know what it is and just list it as a "Interceptor 500 shock". I've scored cheap Fox and Works shocks that way.

Can the YSS shock be found in the USA . I see ebay ads from UK or Italy. Do you have any experience with the YSS shock yourself?

This is the VF500F shock modded from an F2.

I think this was possibly an earlier shock, as the mods seem to have evolved and the clevis pieces got a little more refined looking...

This is an F2 shock modded for a VF1000F.

I think the clevis pieces were fairly similar in design, except for length, and the depth the lower shock mount was machined was driven by what inside distance was needed for the application. It looks like the 500 clevis pieces were longer and just shortened for the application as they are just squared off on the end, not radiused like the 1000.

No, not that I know of the last time I looked.

You want to buy from this seller, biketyresuk. They are the eBay store front for the UK YSS R&D center, Firefox Racing. The only vendor I would buy from. I get my shocks from the UK faster than some parts I have ordered in the US. Zero issues. I do know of issues buying from the Italy sources, taking forever just to tell you they don't have inventory and then waiting for refund. Don't bother to save a few bucks.

    Absolutely. Currently installed on:

    1989 CB-1
    1988 Hawk GT
    1995 VFR750F
    1984 VF1000F
    1986 VF1000R
    1998 ST1100

They are a great value in my opinion. They work great and look good doing it. Hawk shock...

I have Fox, Nitron and Ohlins shocks on bikes too, but I can't afford to install those on every bike. And every bike doesn't need them. I purposely chose YSS on a couple bikes because I did not want to mount a remote res, and really didn't need one. The bikes are not on a race track getting constantly worked hard and hot. Penske makes great shocks too, but they are not cheap either. The money I save can be put into the forks.

    ST1100 shock

thanks for the detailed pics with measurements. I'm going to go ahead and mod the set I have just cause I have access to mill and got a piece of 7075.
I'll have to search for a replacement spring, any comment on that? (160 lb rider)

The YSS shock sounds like a good deal if I get tired of messing with the Showa

Let me see if the Hyperco spring has any markings on it to identify the spring rate.
