Recently picked up a 1987 honda vfr interceptor 700 as a nice little project before the season.

Ive done quite a bit of maintenance getting it up to proper running and driving condition but recently a problem has become much more prominent as the temperature outside increases.

The choke is a little sticky, after riding the bike past about 7k the choke throttle or choke sticks right around 4k rpms. Rode today and it got so bad the bike somewhat overheated today, never got anywhere over the halfway mark on the temperature gauge but it was riding at a considerably higher temp than normal, the radiator fan came on for the first time ever, it sounded like a whole bus.

If you fiddle with the choke up and down and the throttle (push on the throttle like your trying to return it) after a while it fixes itself but its influenced the most by the choke for sure, cools down and rides normal for a bit before sticking again. If you repeat the process its ridable but its annoying to deal with especially since the bike stays in power when attempting to slow down, brakes discs where piping hot following ride. If you put the choke all the way on and then off, it fixes itself, stays out of power and rides normal but like i said randomly even without touching the choke the bike will just give itself throttle, nothing crazy, bikes not running away on me but its definitely noticeable.

I replaced throttle cable A and have throttle cable B on the way in the mail here are my main questions and concerns:

-is the throttle/choke sticking causing the overheating, or should i start looking into my cooling system?

-Is this more likely a throttle or choke problem or a little of both or something else?

-got a replacement throttle cable B brand new but I couldn't find anything as far as a choke cable goes specifically for a 87' 700 so I ordered a 93' vfr 750 choke cable which looks pretty much exactly the same as whats used on the 87's, Please tell me this choke cable will be compatible? or am i going to have to order one from europe and wait almost a month to come in.

-Ive done extensive reading on the service manual cannot find any official lengths or specs of the choke cable and replacing it.

all comments and opinions are appreciated

since you decided u have a sticky choke cable......

id suggest you get under the fuel tank and disconnect the choke cable from the lever its hooked to. in warm weather it shouldnt be hard to start using no choke if carbs are clean.

idle speed adjusting screw is useful for setting a good warmup speed no need for choke.

Its got no problem starting with no choke in the recent weather (all four carbs have been cleaned and rebuilt) it just begins to randomly stick while riding when getting it past a certain rpm, when fiddling with the choke is when the rpms and the bike returns to normal which is what leaves me to believe its a choke problem. But since it happens even without touching the choke could this be a throttle cable problem? i let the bike cool down and fired it up again and played around with the idle screw it seems to be in the right position...thank you very much for you insight.
