Just recently blindly purchased an 02 VFR800 for 600 bucks. I got it home and did some investigation into its components. The bike is cosmetically complete and in order to run mechanically (may) need a new fuel pump. Its missing one of the ignition coils which I can replace for $45. My question is: how much money is worth putting into this bike to restore/fix it? It's got 65k miles and seems to have never been dropped or beaten too terribly. Is it worth keeping to ride? Should I fix and sell it?

If you can get it running for a couple hundred dollars and the tires aren't dangerously old, then take it for a spin and see if you like it. If so, go thru the systems and ride the fuck out of it. If you don't like it, flip it. If it's cosmetically as nice as you say, then you'll likely do ok.

    Pics?

The only other bike I've ridden is an '04 Ninja 250 which I just sold. Think this is an acceptable jump in power or should I be looking for something else?

    Only you can answer that.

How many years have you been riding?
    How tall are you?
    How much do you weigh?
What do you want to do with it?
Does it do anything for you looks wise?
    Do you want a "project"?

Riding for a bit under a year, 250 was my first bike. I'm 5'11", 18 years old so still very young and new to riding. I weigh 155, looking for a good commuter bike and something I can ride with my friends (don't have fast bikes). Long-distance riding is also appealing to me as I live in South Carolina and travel to Maine 3x a year at least. Always love to have a project, just not a money pit.

Sounds like a fairly decent fit, size and usage. VFRs are kinda heavy though. But if you can manage that machine in uneven parking lots and maybe have to pick it up...

They are not wicked fast, but are fast enough to get you in trouble. Which is pretty much any motorcycle.

It's usually up to the input provider to determine how "safe" a particular model bike is. A 180 HP bike is not inherently more dangerous, it's temptations and potential is.

The "money pit" verdict can't be predicted unfortunately. That is a hindsight determination.

    Depends on your commute.

In town stoplight to stoplight, its gonna be terrible. Hot and heavy not.in good way

    Highway.. different story.

She preferred to stretch her legs 60mph + rock solid and so comfortable.

I recently had a 04 ninja 250. Its a fun little bike but felt like a toy really. I sold it for a 94 vmax1200. About twice the weight. Every bike has a learning curve but you get use to it pretty quick. The vfr would be a big step up. The ninja's twin was a soulless engine. Not much power and not a good exhaust note but revved to the moon. Well at least you don't want a rocket 3. My friend has one and i can barely move it on flat ground. Yes its a torque monster but not my cup of tea. The vfr is a wonderful bike. Take it easy and you should be fine. I live in maine. What part do you visit?

My mom actually lives in the Fairfield area so I'm around there quite a lot. Have some favorite spots like Borestone Mountain and Reid state park that would be fun to ride to I think. The Ninja did rev like crazy, and I'm excited to see how this VFR turns out. If it ends up being a beater, do you think it would be asking a lot to sell it and at least make my $600 back?

IF you can get it running solid, $1900 - $2100 would be possible. You really dont know whats going on with the bike until it runs and rides. It could need other maintenance.
    Post up some pictures....
