    Hi everyone,
Two weeks before Christmas I wa the winning bidder at auction for a one owner Gen5 that was being auctioned as part of a deceased estate. Now, the pictures of the bike at auction looked great, not so much when I arrived to pick her up. I wasn’t in a position to attend prior to the auction and inspect the bike.
The good thing is that the bike is a genuine one owner, with 50,000km, has two original keys and two aftermarket spares, has its books with complete service history, complete tool kit and some spare (damaged) fairings.
The bad, the last service was carried out 2,500km’s ago (you’re thinking this is good aren’t you), but that was 15 years ago. The bike has obviously been sitting dormant for a long time so the tank is full of rust, and there is a lot of oxidation covering the metal parts, most concerning is that there are spots of oxidation on the exposed part of the frame (I will post pics in a seperate post below).
I have made some in roads dismantling the bike, I have cleaned the tank with hydrochloric (muriatic) acid and it has come up well. I will post some photos below showing the in tank fuel pump and filter which is not pretty and is requiring replacement. I have cleaned up a lot of the parts and will be doing a complete strip and refurbish.
    Things to be done include;
Master cylinder rebuild kits for clutch and brakes, including new paint for the masters.
New braided lines for clutch and brakes. I have read a bit about de-linking the brakes but that means finding donor parts from, I think a cbr600 and cbr1000, not in great supply in Australia but please chime in if you have any advice on this, I have only ordered the clutch line so far.
    Caliper rebuild with kits.
    Clutch slave replacement.
    New wheel bearings.
    New swing arm bearings.
    Valve shim clearance check.
    New tapered head stem bearings.
Powder coat foot peg mounts front and rear.
    Powder coat wheels.
Frame, I need to do something but don’t know what, I’m after advice here. I need to remove the oxidation, but this results in a polished finish which I don’t like nir wish to maintain, I think my only option is to powder coat, please school me with advice.
Deep clean the engine, exhaust and everything else.
Paint radiator top and bottom tanks.
Rebuild forks, powder coat lowers.maybe a mosfet reg/ rec, I will first check the original, but this is probably on the cards.

Here are a few extra photos including the oxidation/corrosion on the frame.

I admire your desire to make it new again...but I'd fix the mechanical stuff, wax it, and ride it until the wheels fall off. Still...a flat black powder coated frame and swingarm would rock...

Get the frame powdercoated in black. I reckon that will look great against the yellow. My 99 is on the original brake lines and honestly they feel perfectly fine.
