    Hi guys,
i recent had the dreaded reg/rec issue with the melted yellow wires to the stator connector. Ive got some guy sorting a new shindengen regrec with beef'd up wiring which i will solder directly to stator wiring.
I thought i better do the stator test, which i have 0 resistance on all three yellow wires, deos this mean i need to replace the stator, even though i never had any charging issues? I also tested all 3 to ground which showed no continuity.
    any help much appreciated
    many thanks
    Clint

If you spotted the failing RR in time, then you may have got away with it not damaging the Stator.

However the problem is a stator can test out OK when cold but the insulation on the stator windings can start to degrade as it gets hot and then instead of charging the bike when you first fire the bike up, it can start to short things out and you end up stranded.

That is why I fitted a cheapo voltmeter to my 6th gen - you need the sort showing volts as a number not a row of pretty lights. It won't prevent problems but it allows you to know what is normal and then if you see volts rocket or drop through the floor it gives you a chance to head for some place safe before the energy left in the battery is drained and you end up stranded.

Personally the cost of a stator cover gasket is not excessive - so for peace of mind I would order up a gasket and then unbolt the stator cover and look inside. If you are greeted by the sight of crispy fried windings and that smell of burnt electrical insulation - then you know it will need replacement. Otherwise fit the new gasket and button it back up - no harm done.

Good luck - let us know how you get on.

Right. Electronics must be tested warm/hot. The stator gasket can likely be reused. I don't think that I've ever replace done. Just be careful at disassembly.

0 resistance on any three wires...to each other? to ground? You'll also want to do the VAC test.

The nominal resistance is around 1 ohm so you should use an ohm meter suitable for that and make sure to compensate for lead resistance.

Agreed - but if you are not fully conversant with the testing required - you could just take a peek inside ...
