A little pre Christmas work. Pulled apart the front end. Glad I did.
    Not torqued:
    Front axle nut
    Steering stem nut
    Caliper bolts
I guess I should check the obvious no matter what.

The lower bolts stripped out so I had to drill them out. I haven’t unpacked the RO parts yet, but judging by the cmsnl parts image, I might need some hand holding on sequence of part install. I tried to lay them out in order, but I feel I messed up the sequence. Looks like a Tuesday project.

Merry Christmas to all my moto friends!

Oh dear. Early forks... Worth trying to get hold of a set of the later forks, they're cartridge and while not a patch on modern cartridges quite a lot better.

    Or go with emulators.

I'd recommend doing what we do on track days to check the basic systems, torque, etc. You can probably find a good list on any of the track day org sites.

Was not expecting damper rod forks, If this bike is a keeper and you want to keep it stock-ish, time to invest in some emulators.

When I ride my few remaining bikes with stock damper rod forks, no matter how fresh, it is literally jarring.

    Merry Christmas.

Put them together with what you have for now, save your money. Down the road, you can invest in the RO kit to convert to more modern USD forks.

Ahh the rabbit hole of used bikes.
    Forks: 1st gen
Front Calipers: 2nd gen - 4 pot per. That just added so much more cost..MF!

Money was gifted for this bike build so now I can move forward. Kind of bad timing, but at least I have some coin to get the brakes done with accounting department approval.
FYI, this is a self-regulated company so my wife has nothing to do with this (her comment 98% of the time- "just buy the parts we will figure it out"). It is more about credit debt vs bike awesomeness vs my personal stress level.
Time to shop it up. Rebuild kits all around and brake lines.

Sexy! Is that the TI kit for the front or just another company?

I ordered all the parts individually from Richard at Titan Classics, as the kit wasn't available then . The seals, O-rings and pad covers I purchased separately from CMSNL. The DLC coated ti allen bolts I picked up from ProBolt. But the parts are what you would get in the kit. Just make sure to mic your pistons and confirm diameters.

Richard's kits at Titan Classics are very close to the same price as buying all OEM parts.

Forks finally completed. Thankfully someone made a vid, which eased my mind a bit. Also took a nice photo of layout for future reference. Time for caliper rebuilding.
Yesterday was Nova time which I promised my wife, which went well. Squeezed in a quick “I need to run” ST1100 loop. Dang that is a fun bike for some odd reason. Couch on the highway maybe?
So garage clean up and calipers tomorrow. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

Here are the old bushes. image.jpg Did you know that Venhill USA does not list the VFR400 for cables, but if you go to the UK site and pull the part number you can order the 400 cables through the US site. Saved a ton of time and it was free shipping.

From what I see, those bushings look pretty good.

I agree about the ST... there is something so fun about that big ol thing. I upgraded my suspension front and rear so it feels like it "lost" quite a bit of weight. And that big torquey V4 is awesome.

image.jpg Annnnnnnnnnnnd. We are back. At least to finish he front end. Lessons learned from dremeling off the lower race on big red. This time I went about 60% through the race and a light tap with hammer and chisel. Between punches the race made a slight cracking sound. An viola, race fell right off. Learning all the time.

also sandblasted old paint and rust. Going to give the lower triple a spray and pack the bearing after.

Finally got the front end put back together. Calipers rebuilds are tomorrow. New throttle, choke, and clutch cables. Clutch is a bit long. New fuel tank rubbs, Samco hoses, thermostat and radiator cap. New tires and to top it off new Showa stickers directly from Japan! image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

Throttle cables UNDER the lower triple? NEVER seen a Honda routed like that.

Everything looking good, but I would re-think that.
