Why is my VFR so fast?

I have a 95 (ish) VFR and I'm slowly getting to know her. She had been messed with and I'm working my way through, undoing the many little bugs and problems the previous owner left her with. The wiring has been hacked to pieces and we think (myself and my mechanic) that we've got most of it sorted. She has a Lazer exhaust and I suspect he might have done some other tuning work. This bike is fast, really much faster than I thought it would be. At the weekend the fuel-pump needed a replacement and my mechanic brought her back after sorting it and he said the same, this thing does not pull like a 750. I'm a pretty experienced rider and have owned a lot of 1000cc bikes and this would easily keep up with any of them.
So my first question is, I guess, are they all like this? Is the VFR engine just filled with some kind of special magic and they are all just way better than you expect?
But what I'm wondering is why someone was messing around with the wiring. Is there some common electrical tuning modification for these bikes? I don't see how as it's not fuel-injected by maybe there was some other thing that I've not been able to find out about?
    Many thanks.

wires coming from stator to reg/rec are notorious for being altered, or finger fucked, depends which side of the pond your from. I usually cut out the connectors and hard wire them together. They would be on the right side of the bike as you sit on it, above the clutch cover. :worthless:

I´m also new to the "old" but not obsolete VFR 1995 , and after sorting some problems when i bought it ( total refresh - Check my post about it ) i was amazed how quick and easy to ride this bike is with almost 30 years. It really likes to rev.
