My '97 really stinks-up the garage after I return home.....no drips on the floor or anywhere that I can find. Smell goes away after a bit so not continuous.
Is there something broken that is causing this?
I do have the PAIR removed and blocked-off, has a Stage 1 jet kit as well.

    Appreciate suggestions....

Just cuz it's not dripping doesn't mean its not leaking when running/being used.

When was the last time you had the tank off to look for moisture?

I have not had the tank off for probably two years now....that was when I put the Stage 1 jet kit in.
The strong smell was there before I did the jet kit.
Seems like the strong smell is coming out the exhaust, like fuel is dripping into a cylinder and it is just hot enough to vaporize the fuel. Thinking this might be to an incorrect float level??
    Just thinking out loud here....

keep thinkin as the float levels on that model are not adjustable.

My 92 is fresh from a COMPLETE carb rebuild (with stock jetting except for +1 on pilot), PAIR and CA bullshit removal. It smells a little rich, BUT I haven't installed the new plugs yet. I wanted to burn all the shit off from the bike sitting before installing. I KNOW it needs new plugs.

When was the last time you put plugs in?

Oh, my 95 that I just went thru smells a touch rich too, but not quite as bad. (Stock jetting too) Plugs look perfect.

This is a plug (CR9EH-9) that had a bunch of miles, but the bike was running / fueling perfect.

Tan / Latte colored is what I want. Not too white, not too black. I get a nice grey on some bikes.

New plugs were installed at just under 35k mikes, currently at 40300 miles. Now time-wise....plugs were replaced in July of 2019.
Plan is to remove both side and lower covers, go for a short ride, return to garage and start checking for fuel dripping. I know I replaced one fuel line right after I purchased the VFR, but that was in 2015...so of course very possible that one of the plastic lines is dripping and has been for awhile.
Will update when I know more.

I have been thinking about this more.....I think what is happening is that when I stop, the hot engine below the fuel tank is vaporizing some fuel which vents out the cap until the engine cools down enough.
There is supposed to be some insulation under the tank, cannot say that I have seen it on my tank. I may just need to add/replace insulation material. Anyways that is my current "thinking".....

If you are getting that much of a smell, I would expect the key hole to be moist under the lid.

    Was yours a California model?

Funny, my 91 gassed us oot of the house we were living in years ago, it had the air handler in the garage, parked the bike and went oot for dinner. Came home and the house smelled like a gas station, my fear was that the little lady was gona read me the riot act and make me park my pride and joy outside. I ended up doing the fuel rails with new o-rings, problem solved. There was permiation around where the tubes went into the body of the carbs, no leaks though.

I recently changed the plugs on my 93 bike, plugs had 8000 miles and it was time. I would occasionally get a pop on start up, but ran like a raped ape. So we will see if it still happens. Valve lash was done a while ago and everything was in spec with cams looking good. Rear plugs looked like Captians, fronts were a little more dark, but I was running iridium plugs instead of the lower level CR9EH-9 - my bikes only drink ethanol free benzine btw. Cheers

I ran the engine today and looked for drips...did not see any, did not go for a ride, just idle and holding at about 2k RPMs. After about 10 min, shut engine off and waited for a few minutes....no fuel smell. I assume I did not get the engine hot enough, so will need to go for that ride tomorrow.
I will look to see if there is any wetness under the cap after I take out for that ride.
I may just replace both fuel tubes and O rings....thinking of getting the aluminum ones....about the same price....see if that takes care of the problem like it did for you.

Yep, I know of the ebay seller, have purchased previously purchased from him for another Honda I had.
The set of two aluminum tube with O rings is $80. Partzilla shows the OEM tubes at $38.72 each x 2 = $77.84.
Guess I could try to find O rings locally and just replace the four O rings...but that seems silly.

    Thats not silly. 7x2mm Viton.
Probably spend a couple dollars max. I buy them in bulk (I do a lot of carbs) and they are like 14 cents each.

The only time I've had to buy the tubes is when I get a bike that someone tried removing the carbs the wrong way and stressed and cracked them.

Always do the fuel tube o-rings and I agree with Capt, usually the tubes are only damaged from poor removal/installation. This is also why it took me 3hrs to get my 400 carbs back together. I don't want to purchase fuel tubes.

My garage is housing 9 motos and it does not smell like fuel, it smells like badass!! ..ok maybe a little fuelie every now and then, generally no smell.

Today took the VFR out for a bit, got engine to temp, returned to garage and once again began checking for any drips or wetness under the carbs....nothing.
I also kept checking the fuel cap and I could smell fuel at the key hole, but not bad. After about 7-9 min of checking and rechecking, still no smell so I left it.
About 30 min later, I opened a side door to the garage and the strong fuel smell was present. Quickly checked under the carbs...nothing....nothing at the fuel cap either.
Guess I will get some new O rings, thanks Capt for the size info but need additional info.
Partzilla shows a gasket kit with three different sizes of O rings; two pairs are for the two fuel tubes and the last pair for a vent tube.
Are the fuel tubes different sizes? I did not remember them being different.
What am I not understanding here????

The fuel tubes are not different sizes. But there are two different vent tube sizes.
