On my 1993 VFR750F-NP my front right exhaust port is leaking so I need to fit a new exhaust gasket. Unfortunately the bolts, or are they nuts, are in really bad shape. Anyone had any experience in removing them? Are they bolts or nuts over the studs?

BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANYTHING... Start soaking now with real penetrating fluid. Liberal and often. Apply some heat from a torch every now and then.

You may never get what is left of those nuts off, but if you are really lucky, the studs might release themselves from the head.

Tiny little M6 studs that rust and snap for fun.

If you want to remove them then spray with lots and lots of proper penetrating fluid (or a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone) daily for a week before you even attempt it and then get the engine hot before trying to undo the nuts. You've a 25/25/50 chance between the nut coming off, the stud unscrewing or the stud snapping...

Personally if on the fronts and they look that bad I'd cut the nuts off.

The nuts and studs are still available new from Honda.

UK site so probably not worth you ordering from them but nice fiches and show the part numbers!

I would also cut those particular ones off ON THE OUTSIDE of the exhaust flange. At least you would have some stud left to soak - heat - repeat and then attempt with a stud remover. Or double up a couple nuts.
