In the process of cleaning up the 4th gen before sale. The engine block is covered in chalky aluminium corrosion, and the area between the heads looks like absolute crap. The clutch cover also looks pitted, but doesn't have the same kind of residue. I initially started going at it with some wire wool, but worried that i'm going to cause more pitting and damage any clear coat if it existed.

    How do you do it?

Here in thr U.S. I've found spray on wheel cleaners to be a very good starting poing. Spray on a cool, wet engine. COVER IT and let it soak for a bit. Use a medium stiff brush with long bristles and get in as many knooks and crannies you can. Rinse and repeat.

Most wheel cleaners are a very mild acidic solution but are safe for clear coated wheels. They will remove the majority of surface oxidation and be gentle enough for most everything else.
