Hey all, my '14 non-deluxe is exhibiting the following new behavior.

    In 1st gear.
    Clutch pulled in.
    Kill switch set to "run".
    Ignition on.
    Kickstand up.
    Won't start.

If put it in neutral, it will start.
If I then shift into first from neutral, clutch still in, it stays running.

    Any thoughts?

    Paging Dr @Grum

Graham will do a much better diagnosis than me. But to trigger the starter solenoid you need continuity to ground through either the neutral switch, or through the clutch and sidestand switches if not in neutral. So probably the kickstand switch or clutch switch is faulty. Easy enough to "jumper" the connectors for those with a short bit of wire to complete a circuit for testing purposes. If you changed the clutch lever for an aftermarket part, these sometimes don't activate the clutch switch properly.

Ha Ha, why thankyou Dr Terry, agree with your diagnosis, kind of..!

    IF it won't Crank Over.....
Seeing you can Start the engine in Neutral, and assume ride the bike, there is not much left in the Starting circuit that will upset an In Gear Start.
Also, if you can place the bike in gear and ride - then the SideStand switch MUST be working. So that only leaves the Clutch Switch and its wiring OR an open circuit Clutch Diode. See the yellow hi lite area on the simplified Starting Circuit attached.

As Dr Terry rightly describes it for an In Gear Start - the Grounding side of the Starter Coil (to energize it) is through the Clutch Diode, the Clutch Switch, then to Ground via the SideStand in the UP (Closed) position.

So First, check the clutch switch, make sure the wires are properly connected, place an ohm meter across the switch and make sure you see continuity/zero ohms as you activate the clutch lever.
Failing any issues with the clutch switch - Next remove the Clutch Diode located in the Left Fuse Box, with your meter set to Diode Range measure both of the Diodes. If you're not sure how to do this, simply Swap the Clutch Diode with the Neutral Diode thats located in the Right Fuse Box, (see attached) see if that changes things, if you can now do an in gear start you've found a faulty Diode.

Good Luck - lets know how you get on.

This was it... been using my shorties since I got the bike, but perhaps the setting slipped on its own to the shortest one, and the sensor did not actuate when the clutch was pulled in. Adjusted it and it's fine now. Thanks! Ugh.

Grum it was the aftermarket levels I've got, the shortest setting won't actuate the sensor. Adjusted and it works now. Thanks so much, sorry you had to say all those words just for that but hopefully it helps someone else down the line.
