i currently have about 35k miles on my 2014 VFR. my previous ride was a 2007 VFR and the stock stator burned out at 44k miles. it was replaced and then the replacement burned out at 92k miles. has anyone experienced this problem on the 8th gen? i did hear later that the 6th gen charging system was prone to issues as i experienced. was the charging system beefed up between 6th and 8th generation VFRs?

The 8gen is vastly improved over the 6gen. I have not heard of a single Stator failure on a 8gen.

    The 8gen gen has...
    - Forced oil cooling for the stator.
    - Much lighter electrical loads than a 6gen.
    - Greatly improved and efficient R/R charging system.
    - Better electrical connections.

My own 2014 has done over 92,000k with no issues at all. Rest assured the 8gen is probably the most reliable VFR ever built especially in the electrical side of things. Hopefully you'll never see charging system issues like you've had with the 6gen.

Thanks Grum. I fell in love with the 8th gen soon as it arrived on scene. I was having problems with my 06 a few years back with what turned out to be clutch. I was ready to get rid of it (somewhere around 220,000 km at this point). I saw a white 8th gen with OEM bags for sale used with around 15K km. Road out to the dealership in another city and looked this bike over. Almost pristine and the price was excellent. I was ready to take whatever they would give on trade, and had a credit card in hand to take care of the rest. But the ergonomics on the 8th gen has changed. I'm sure it has not made much of a difference to most people, but after riding it for about an hour, I was in a lot of pain due to a previous injury so the idea of getting an 8th gem was put to rest.

Anyway, yes there are lots of reports of stator problems with the 6th gen. Presently I am on my 3rd. But I also have 227,000 km on the babe. And it still purrs like a kitten and rips like a scared alley cat. But, what I was interested in knowing, does the 8th gen stator and rectifier fit the 6th gen? There are no problems right now, but I do know that time is running out soon.

Wow 227,000km is fantastic effort. It would be a tricky mod fitting the 8gen charging system to a 6gen not quite compatible, 8gen has a Magnetic Pole Sensor through the alternator casing. Think you'd be better off considering a series R/R like the SH847 or Mosfet FH020AA shunt type both manufactured by Shindengen.

OK Thanks. There is a great thread here by mello-dude that explains and offers great advice on dealing with this shortfall in the 6th gen sator. I think it is titled "The Drill". Worth looking at if you have a 6th gen and are running into stator issues.
