I have discovered that the blade on my cam chain tensioner is shot and must be replaced and I have a good used replacement. My next question is how do I know if the tensioner unit is defective? what do I look for? A bad spring? As you probably know, new tensioners are not available and I need to know what to look for in a used one.

You won't know if the used one has any better spring than your old one, but go low mileage if you can find one......

Have you considered a manual tensioner? Somebody here more familiar with that Gen will likely know.

I would certainly like to try a manual tensioner if available!

No such thing. The best alternative is a bike with "Gear Driven Cams".
