Hi all, my VFR has very jerky transmission when I'm in the lower gears and riding in traffic with what I would call a neutral throttle input. Ie, when I'm neither accelerating or decelerating. It's very jerky and seems to snatch, (Sorry if that's not a good expression for you US guys, I believe it means different things each side of the Atlantic!).
I am assuming that the most likely culprit is a very worn cush drive in the rear hub. The chain and sprockets are by no means new, but I wouldn't say that they are that badly worn,. unless of course the gearbox sprocket is loose.
    Thoughts?
    Cheers, Tony.

Sounds like the typical drive line lash situation to me.... just downshift and keep the revs up. You could have worn cush drive rubbers, but how much mileage on this beast?

To be honest, when I cleaned the carbs out I only set them up by eye, thinking about it, they could be a little out of balance which wouldn't help.

If you put it on the centre stand it should be easy to sort out if this is cush drive or chain and sprockets

    +1 on thumbs.
I bet your chain may be a bit too loose. If the chain has a kink or tight link, it would be exaggerated by the chain tightness and have bad lash. Never really had a cush be so bad that it road that poorly, but shit does happen.

I did adjust the chain not long ago. I Haven't got a main stand, and I think the Predator aftermarket exhaust precludes me from fitting one anyway. I do have a paddock stand and tried rocking the rear wheel whilst in gear, but the backlash didn't seem excessive. Anyone able to give me an idea of how much is acceptable movement?
    Many thanks, Tony.

If you are a cheap bugger like me, get a piece of thin rubber (I use a bicycle inner tube) and pack out the cush drive if there is too much free play in there.
