    G'day, Andy from WA (Perth).
Recently acquired a 2001 Gen5 with just over 13k on the clock.
Since photo was taken, I have fitted a Hurricane handlebar conversion.

Hi Andy,Nice Bike mate. Can you send a pic of the Hurricane Kit fitted.? I am a standard purest ,but exploring other add ons . A mate in the UK said he fitted a Gas Rear shock and mirror extenders. I’m looking at Mirror extenders , as I’m not the skinniest. Haha I have my manual now and will give her its first service since buying . It has 35k on the clock and although there is nothing wrong,I just wish to do a proper service. Thinking about the screen they make in Germany for it also. I’m undecided on handlebars, hence I’m asking you about your kit. My last bike (2002) was a ST1100 , But I always wanted more of a sports bike. Anyway, catch up here soon.

Gday Warren, welcome to the VFR fraternity!
I also like to keep as close to standard as possible, but sometimes there's a requirement to make a bike a bit more comfortable on long rides. I'm 6'1" in the old language, and will be 71 in 2 weeks and the body ain't quite what it used ta was!!:(
So....on the advice of a bike club colleague I purchased the Hurricane handlebar kit. I also bought a set of lowered pegs from the US which makes the whole experience more enjoyable!
Anyway, here's a couple of pics of the handlebar kit.
    Cheers, Andy

Had my 1996 VFR750F for 15 years never broke down, recently started coughing and cutting out then stopped completely with no spark on one plug I've tried so far will check volts from ignition and coils soon. Has been super reliable so a bit surprising, any ideas??

Inevitably it is more questions than answers at this stage, so a few thoughts..

I suspect you might get more response if this message was listed in the "Mechanics Garage.

You mention that the bike "has never broken down" but it would help to know the context. Have you actually been using the bike daily over the last winter or has it just been pulled out of winter storage and is now playing up despite running perfectly when you parked it up? (I guess it is spring time down-under).

If it was parked up over winter - what preparation was done?
If you have been riding it regularly over the winter - has the bike had any work done on it recently which might have contributed to the problem?

Carburettor bikes don't like old fuel, so any chance you filled up with a bad batch? Bad fuel might explain coughing and cutting out, but seems at odds with the comment that just "one of the plugs is not sparking" which points towards an electrical/ignition system problem.

If it is electrical a quick thing to rule out is to cycle the kill switch a few times - after 20+ years corrosion can slowly build up. If it then runs OK give that switchgear a through clean.

Doubtless you know VFRs have not been spared from the charging system gremlins which affected loads of Honda(and other makes of) motorbikes. So it is also worth getting out a volt meter and checking the battery volts. If that is drained below 12.5 volts then you probably need a replacement battery and then need to do "the drill" to check for any other charging system faults - as a faulty battery may simply be a side affect of a charging system fault elsewhere .

If all fails perhaps it is time to put in a call to your racing contacts.

Good luck - let us know how you get on.

I had an issue with the front left plug on my 86 and there was water getting into the plug boot that had corroded the resistor that lives in there. You can disassemble the plug cap by inserting a flat blade screwdriver and undoing the brass end that engages the spark plug. You should find a red resistor in there, if it is un-saveable then a new NGK plug cap will contain the same resistor that can be swapped in.

I think it's fixed after I removed tailpiece and lower fairing, my aim was not to disturb many things at once and being systematic as I'm a Broadcast engineer and ex-racer. Next step was to check kill and ignition switch whilst measuring 12 volts to coils, bike was cranking well but dead so I sprayed no drowned kill switch with WD40 as getting to ignition is a nightmare OMG, and WTF it started firing/farting while I was modulating choke and voila so far so good. My assumption without dismantling switch etc is I had a regulator/rectifier burn up a connector years ago due to high resistance and current too, and given age I never hose my bike or ride in the rain any more, next rides will be nervous.

Will - Wild west of Melbourne. '09 VFR800 white & black (as per profile pic)

Yes, the tank cover needs a clean, so does the rest of the bike! (just acquired an OEM topbox (but red) to go with my OEM panniers (black), so painted the lot to match the rest of the bike)
