It looks as if your smiley face saw jev's avitar! I'd wave at her in a heartbeat no matter what she's riding!

I usually drop the left hand off and wave at all bikes. I figure if they do not wave back its their loss.

I get least response when on my sport bike and gets better when on the VFR. Even more so if I have bags on, passenger or riding when its cold out. Seems flashy plastic just perpetuates squid to some folks. Never mind them - their problem, not yours. :biggrin1:

Guilty, i do it. In the UK because you're on the other side of the road (or correct side depending on your point of view), you do a nod because otherwise you'd have to take your hand off the throttle. Since i moved to Sweden and now drive on the other side of the road, a simple raise of the hand does the job, except Hardley owners who simply don't because they think its girly or something...

Interesting thread. The comments sound like the ones on the SOHC4 forum. I almost alway wave if I can. Most everyone waves back, including guys on Harleys who are long time riders (you can tell). The new Harley riders mostly ignore you if you aren't on a cruiser.

Yes I always do the wave or the nod as well. I'm also a rider who transitioned from a cruiser to the VFR, although I had quite a few years between the bikes. Back when I had the cruiser, a Honda V-45 Magna, nearly everyone waved or noded in reply. Now when I wave only about 1/2 of the cruiser group waves back. Is it the the change in the times or is it that I'm riding a sportbike?

It's not the times. It's the riders. I've been riding sportbikes since 1990 and even then cruisers wouldn't wave back. I gotten gotten more responses as the years have gone on.

I thought for the most part to start, that Harley's never waved back (and still the most reason) is because they are riding american iron, and you are on a jap (or non-american) bike. American made vs. Jap (or any non-american made and/or owned company)

Like most on the thread I wave 99% of the time. I did have a non waving Harley that I would pass almost every time I was commuting from work. I had passed him probably 10 times, and every time I lay my hand out in the breeze for him with no response. So the next morning I passed him I had a rather non-Christian salute for him- his head swiveled so far around and his eyes got so big, I could see them around his mock-aviator goggles! A couple days later as I passed him again, I gave him the biggest five finger wave I could muster- and starting that day and continuing until now he actually returns the wave- with all of his fingers as well!

Around North Texas, everyone seems to waive, even the H-D folks. It's a ritual of sorts that I never knew about until I started riding this year. I think it's pretty cool.

Yep, nodding seems more common than waving here in the UK; probably a throttle had thing. Shame about the L-Plate discrimination.

I drive old cars owners of which tend to wave to each other as well so it's an instinctive thing for me. I'll always nod or wave to other two-wheelers and don't usually give a damn if some of them choose not to acknowledge it.

Over here in West Australia most riders will acknowledge a wave or nod; after all we are deemed to be mad and strange by the remainder of the community so there is a special bond between us all.
I usually nod to other bikers rather than wave, as it is often in traffic when I am otherwise occupied avoiding those four wheel things. Same thing as others have noted though about the cruiser guys, whether Harleys or the wannabees, they hardly ever acknowledge. Their problem, not mine. I don't care, as I am happy to be riding. Would take a lot to remove the grin from my face.
Besides I don't expect the 'real' bikies on their Harleys to wave or whatever. I even get tempted to nod at scooters, but they have no idea what is going on.
I like the feeling of being a part of the 'two-wheel brotherhood/sisterhood'. Long live the wave or nod!

    Nice LOL!

When I staeted riding in 1998, I lived in MD and it seemed everyone waved. But the more popular bikes seemed to get, less waves were returned!?

The problems I've had were with the true Squids and Harley posers.

On a side note, Jev can you change your avatar? I can't quit staring at it and its affecting my work! LOL!

Where I am from we call it throwing a hand up. Not so much a waveas it is a signal. We also use the head nod a lot. I have found that I will wave at just about everyone but don't always get it back.

It goes both ways. When I had my Road Star, the sportbike guys rarely waved back.

Never have i read a statement more true. If a scooter rider nodded at me i think i'd fall off in shock.

    I wave:
    • scooters get a horizontal head turn as I watch them go by, hands stay on the grips.
    • all bikes with a hand/foot clutch get a hand of the bar wave.

[*]cruisers get the hand falling off the grip drop wave
[*]Indians get the right angle raised "HOW" wave
[*]Nortons and Triumphs get the queen wave (rotate at wrist, then pivot at elbow..repeat)
[*]BMWs get the left arm extended ... no, they just get a single shake of the wrist contemptous wave since they likely paid twice what I did for the VFR.... yet there is still a part of me that wants one.
[*]VFRs get the Gomer Pyle seisure wave most of the time
    • Trikes may or may not get a wave depending on my biorythm

I feel like I'm not concentrating on looking far enough ahead through traffic/along the road if a cyclist waves and I have not seen them to wave back in time.
