That's OK, we are right hand drivers here. The discs were only US$39 each, from Aliexpress.

The bike came with some Progressive Springs and rides at a decent altitude with no excessive dive, so these are staying for now.

What set-up do you use with Emulators Mike? I just followed RT's prescription with yellow springs with 1 turn preload, 15W oil @140mm.

Yeah 15 wt and that height is what I think I ran too, but i did preload the valves more. I THINK I am at 3 turns on yellow springs. But I can't absolutely say for sure, I might be thinking of the VF1000s. But Im pretty damn sure I would have started at more than 1, I prefer my front ends a little "firmer". Obviously at the sacrifice of some real world pavement quality compliance.

Unfortunately I lost a bunch of setup notes on a shop computer hard drive failure. Idiot. I had just been talking about the fact that I needed to back this shit up and...

Now I'm trying to re- document everything.

I have plenty of local back up available, but I was just stupid and lazy.

I have local backup on a Synology NAS drive
Having lost a raid 5 index disk in the NAS and all my backups, I still use the NAS a fast local backup but double up with the cloud services

Having quite a few terabytes of data it takes a good while to backup but knowing there is two sources is just a mind calmer

It’s mostly work Virtual Machines, I have loads

The last stapled of issue Playboy had a little write-up about the Gentleman's Sportbike.

Wow, I never saw that....did you get a scan of that? Seems I remember that article. I got to assemble a brand new one when I worked at a Honda dealer in the 80's. Never saw who bought it. I was just gone one day when I showed up for work. I was sad I did not get it but glad for the owner.

Technically a RAID NAS is just redundancy - not a backup. Always have your info on a minimum of 2 separate discs preferably in separate locations. All multi terabyte restores are potentially a problem. Trying to restore back from the cloud can also sometimes be problematic. I also use a 5 bay NAS with spare drive backups - 30tb. Having all data on a spare drive is always a sensible choice.

Sorry to hijack this thread about data storage...

I took a quick 100km after dinner ride last night, probably the first decent ride I've done on some favourite local twisties. This bike really puts a big grin on my face, and is surefooted and steady on some pretty sketchy bumps. I actually rode the same circuit on my MT-10SP a few hours before, and doubt that my pace on the VFR was any less despite lacking hp, semi-active Ohlins, ABS and Michelin Pilot Road 5s...

The combination of new Bridgestones, rebuilt calipers with EBC HH pads on new discs, cartridge emulators, progressive springs and even the tired old shock held up really well. The motor is also pulling very sweetly and really comes alive from about 6k, and the clutch and gearbox is much nicer than my Yamaha too.

The only downer is that the tailpiece is disintegrating; seems to be a very common issue wth these where the tail cracks at the leading edge of the tailights in both directions, and mine has been patched up (badly) before.

After a visit to the plastic surgeon...

    IMG_2683.JPG

Looks a little ugly but at least I think all of the bike will make it home now. My plastic surgeon has suggested sticking on a piece of clear adhesive film to tie the bottom bar of the tail cowl to the lens and then the upper part of the cowl. I already have some foam blocks inside supporting the lens off the fender. Any other bright ideas? My VTR1000F had two moulded pegs projecting forwards on the back side of the lens, and matching rubber sockets on the fender. I'm also thinking that riding with the solo cowl in place may not be the best idea in future as it probably transfers jolts from the seat back to the tail cowl.

I "Plastic Weld" Epoxy in a horseshoe shaped piece ABS I cut out of a sheet that goes around the front of the taillight on the inside of the cowl. I use a heat gun to mold it to the curved shape on the inside to get a really good bond. Works really good for the extra support that's needed and I do it to all of my VFRs, even before any cracks have started. Also recommend doing it to the actual seat cowl too.

I'll try and post one tonite. I need to winterize my white 86 anyway, so I'll have most of the cowls off already.

1/16" thick, textured on one side.

I reinforce the top mount with some thinner ABS so the rubber bushing will still fit.

    20211129_165826.jpg
I also open up the forward mount and epoxy in some collars so the plastic doesn't get twisted and squished. Even though the stock bolts are shouldered, they still tend to crack here.

Not a bad idea to do the inside of the cowl where it always wants to crack.

Out for a nice 200km run in the countryside today. Quite breezy and warm at around 28C, the VFR ran beautifully. Might need to do some more suspension work at the back, got a bit sketchy on the really bumpy stuff. The photo is at Whakatiwai, the land in the background is the Coromandel Peninsular which is a great day loop trip with epic roads (provided they aren't full of caravans and boats being towed).
