I just bought a 1986 Honda VFR700F, and it's in rough shape. I'm fond of this year and generation of VFR, so I'd like to put some life back into it. I'm needing to find an ignition switch & locking gas cap, but I can't seem to find anything in the usual places that stock it. I've looked at eBay and Amazon, but nothing appears to be compatible/fit. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You're gonna have to go used on the gas cap, 86 and 87 VFRs only. The design (bolt spacing) is slightly different than all the other Honda Type I caps. Any keyless race type gas cap that says it will fit, won't.

I think an ignition switch for the 1987 CBR600F, which can still be sourced, will work. You might have to change the location of some wires on the plug. And the steering lock might not line up, but it should bolt in like stock.

Okay, do the VFR750 parts interchange with the VFR700? I'm a bit confused on the differences between the two other than engine cc's.

Yes for most hard parts. Things like switches and gas caps, absolutely, especiallt 86 to 86. It's when you start getting into 87 versus 86 is when some things are different, but its mostly the ignition system.

aftermarket supplier EMGO has ignition switches for your bike. b4 you get too far into fixing things and spending $$$, it would be smart to check the health of the engine with a compression test.

A thought just occurred to me. I already have a locking gas cap, but it's been spray painted by previous owner and the key cylinder is damaged (drilled out). Is it possible to just "rebuild" a gas cap? Are there replacment key locks, screws, o-rings, etc for this? If so, that'd make life a lot easier for me. Maybe I'll just try to restore the one I have.
