    Cafe..ish low budget project vfr...
Cant decide what to do with fuel pump. Stock pump wasnt working when I got the bike so I removed the thing and thought to use just gravity. Not so sure about that anymore.. Got new contact thingies for the pump, so it probably works, but its big and I kinda have no room for it. By redoing battery holder, I might be able to fit it partly hidden in there, just not that eager to cut that back into bits.
If there is a smaller option available, it would make things easier. I know there is cheap smaller Chinese pumps, but what Ive read they arent that good.
Other thing that Im open to suggestions is the coolant reservoir. I actually need one for my RC36 as well. Ive a watercooling res from my old PC currently on it and I like the looks of it, but the volume of it isnt big enough. Res gets empty when the bike is cold.. Longer PC res would probably do, but I think it might look too long. Dont really want to use soda etc can/bottle either..
Few pics of the project. Obviously no where near done, but should give you an idea what Im going for.

Dude, that is cool. I like the franken-cooler look. Maybe just a larger PC res? Also, is that res capable of taking rocks and stuff? I got nothing for your fuel pump.

From the limited time I've had with my 86, the fuel pump looks to be quite essential to keep the fuel flowing; even with the pump, I need to get the system primed up properly to keep the fuel flowing nicely, so I don't believe that I would like to reply solely on gravity.

.... Yeah. I thought to source a bike that was messed up, but decided to buy never ridden showroom example and hack that up..
Seriously, thats really a rear subframe thats "destroyed", everything else is still in the boxes in various condition. Didnt even need to remove them, since the PO had already stripped her apart, had planned to take the engine etc from this to his ATV. So yeah I kinda destroyed her. Although you might be right since there is a small change that this was special revision, since it came with 3 peace front fairings from 88-89 model. Judging from the custom mounts she had, Im not that convinced they where made by Honda though..
And that RC36 is from salvage yard. Seemed she had a slight bumb with deer/reindeer.. Rear left blinker, tail light with just one clip broken and scraped left mirror, thats all the bits that where worth saving. So dont really feel bad for hacking her up either.. Just hoping the rider is still alive.
And have you ever thought that the bike you ride doesnt really need to look finished. I dont really care if my bikes have dents etc imperfections, especially if I have made them myself.. I just want to modify something :D
Dont know how valued/desired these are in the states, but here in Finland ..pretty much worthless.
Still waiting for the first rock :D And yes, I was going to make some protection for it, but didnt bother, since those are like $10 of ebay and I have GSXR rad on her which is close to double the size than stock. So not so concerned if it cracks..
Thats really what Im worried about. Not that big of a problem if some amount fuel is unusable, but if it doesnt run without problems, there is a slight chance I just leave her sitting in the garage. So might as well make it properly at the first try.

Each to their own, eh Squirrel.

It may not be your taste nor mine, but if its bringing the guy some smiles and enjoyment from an old bike, then why not. Way too much SH&T going on in the world these days, so if something brings a smile to my face, I do it.

Maybe the bike had all kinds of cosmetic or other issues that made a traditional restoration less practical ? maybe he actually "saved" a VFR so it could ride another day. Sometimes the glass is actually half full, not half empty

Agreed straycat. I had a hurricane for 10 years that my old shop manager dragged from an orange field in central california. Missing just about everything except love from me and my friends. We named it Max since it looked like if came right off the movie set Mad Max.
I didn't even have any glass protecting the headlight bulb. I had one of those tinted lens covers zip tied over the gaping hole to protect the bulb. It ran good and I rode it hard, but it was ugly as all get out and I never cared because it made me happy. I was broke and two wheels was better than none at all. :)

the same fuel pump was used by alot of different 'cycle manufacturers on many models over a long number of years right up to the FI era, so a good salvage yard would be a good place to find a replacement. a reliable test on a replacement pump is to check ohms across the pump leads where zero connectivity means a bad pump.
