Okay, so now I just had a problem with my battery! It just died not even a mile from my house!!
So again I just got a 1992 and I am trying to figure this thing out.
It is cold here in Montana right now so I let it warm up a little bit (maybe 5 min.) and then I have to let it idle down my dirt road for a ways. Well I did not even get to the pavement and it totally died. My guess is that it will not charge the batt. unless you have some RPMs.
So my question is at what RPM does it charge and how long should it run on the battery alone before you get in trouble?

On a fully charged battery it should last a few hours.

At idle it won’t be charging.

I would be putting the battery on a charger, then firing the bike up, and measuring the voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running. You should see something in the range 13.5-14.5V; anything lower and the charging system may be suspect e.g. a dead regulator/rectifier or a burnt out alternator. If the volttage looks OK then the battery is probably toast.

I charged up the battery, it takes a full charge. (13.5v)
With the meter still on when I start it it will drop down a little, then when I give it some revs my meter starts freaking out!
Numbers jumping all over the place!!

Okay I charged the batt. and rode it, it only lasted about an hour!
It has some newer (not factory) wiring and what looks like a replacement rectifier/regulator?
would it be just a bad alternator??

gotta check the connectors, ohm out the stator, then figure out which component is bad. Common VFR issue.

This thing is definitely not charging!
I just put new higher wattage headlight bulbs in, would that have anything to do with it?

ohms out of the stator? Would that be checking impedance on the stator itself?

study the factory service manual to learn how to test the AC stator output.

    and reaD "the drill"

So there is power coming from the stator to the r/r when I put the lead for my meter on the red wire out of the r/r it really @#%!s up my meter?
what should it read at the red wire? something like over 14v right?

One yellow wire reads 25v AC, one is 20v and the other is 18v is this good?

When you say "I drop it down a bit and give it some revs and it starts feakin out. jumps all over the place"
That sounds suspiciously like R/R to me. If the voltage test coming into the R/R from the Stator is consistant and correct across the three phases I would be buying a new Mosfet type regulator/rectifier and fitting it - worked for me, but then I never had a flat battery either, just blew a couple of headlamp bulbs.
So - check the voltage output from the Stator first!
