    Hi all,
It has been a while! Random infrequent rides on my 2000 VFR800. I put it on a charger in between rides. Weather is improving so I slipped out this afternoon for a well deserved ride. Bike went wonderfully. Stopped for petrol and went to start and she struggled to start. Slow and less than vigorous the bike started reluctantly. Got it home - waited an hour or so- started it ok. BUT I put the multi meter on it as it idled and it reads 11.8 ish volts even with revs. I think it isn't charging? I'm sure I've seen it near 14 volts with a multi meter when running. What do you all reckon?

At idle that does sound low, but the key question is does it still deliver 14+ once you up the revs just above idle - if so it may be that your RR has concluded your battery is already full so does not need further charging and has basically ceased charging, but if however it stays low once you slightly up the revs then it sounds like it is time to do "the drill".

Just don't leave it for a few rides. It can get worse fast. I noticed it was difficult to start one day. The next I was riding home and it died on me as I entered a busy roundabout. Not fun

test the AC VOLTAGE output from the 3 legs of the stator (both hot and cold and at idle and 5000 rpm) b4 you conclude the r/r is bad.

11.8V even with revs is bad, you should be seeing 13.5-14.5V. I'd start at the 3-pin connector for the alternator on the left side below the seat, these are a weak spot that often get wet, corrode, overheat and melt. If that looks OK then check the AC volts while running across the stator wires, from memory these should show something like 50V when running, a dead stator will be easily identified if not. If the connector and alternator are OK then the RR might be toasted.

The attached fault finding guide will be helpful with the diagnosis.
