Fork Boots / Gaiters

Background: This is the 6th Summer I have had my '97, have only put about 15k miles over this period.
I replaced the fork seals (OEM) after the first Summer.
In the process of replacing the fork seals due to the left side leaking.

Thought the fork seals would last a lot longer than that.

So I have decided to remove the OEM fork protector, replace with fork boots. I found a pair through ebay with the correct dimensions, so far have one installed.

Was just curious if others have installed fork boots on their VFR.

I just don't like the look of full boots on (modern) street bikes. I've seen some pretty decent looking taller plastic guards, but this is usually something I don't worry about. I have a bunch of bikes, and prematurely failing fork seals is not a problem I have.

 

I will add a picture after I get the 2nd boot on; but will add that due to the fairing, do not really see all that much of the boot....half of it is above the fairing, out of sight.

I have no idea what happened to the left fork seal. I had a shop install them then...doing them myself now. Likely bugs, dirt/sand/grit was the cause and not installation....as it did last for six years.

 

Yeah... just a dried bug can do it. It's usually a small nick or ding that wasn't caught and stoned out.

Please do post a pic. And you're right, there isn't much exposed anyway.

 

I'll reserve judgement until I actually see the results...but I'm not optimistic.

 

Look up a neoprene product called Fork Skins..... they velcro on.

 

Got both fork boots on now; you might be able to see them in the picture.
