I did do some searching but did not find an answer (maybe my search terms). I have a vf750 (84) with the dreaded rear cam wear. Bike starts and runs but Clank, clank, clank. Wear is visible with spooning on the followers (is that what they are called?) and uneven profile on the cam lobes.
I ordered a used head from Montreal and those cams and followers look much, much better (but not perfect).
I would rather just swap parts needed as opposed to replacing the head itself but as I did loosen the head bolts, I figure that I have no choice but to replace the head gasket anyway.
So, is there a way to remove the rear head without removing the entire engine?
    Thanks.

Yes, it's possible. Not easy or fun, but possible.

I've done it. But if I had to do it again, I would just pull the engine.

Did you find a head gasket?

Looked at my parts shelf and yes, I had bought an upper kit last year. I haven't looked at the bike since last August.

Shouldn't have to remove the head to replace the rocker pads and cams.

But the frame gets in the way of taking the rocker arm shafts out IIRC.. so you may just want to pull the engine.

That's good news. I am at a crossroads as I have to remove the head anyways to change the head gasket and have will have a look at the valves. There were no leaks at the gasket so I expect my head was fine and I don't have history on the "new" head. I guess measurements are to be done so I can use the better of the heads. I was trying to avoid pulling the entire engine.

Ah well ahem.. I thought this was the Sabre/Magna forum. My apologies.

I have not changed the rear head in frame on an interceptor. Magna, yes.

If you only cracked loose the head bolts, you may be fine getting away with re-torqueing to spec in the order shown in the service manual.

Replacing the cams and rockers would be So much easier with the engine removed.

Yea. I guess taking the motor out would be the best thing to do so I can check for other leaks but lots more time and that always seems to be the premium. All advice has been appreciated.
